Abstract

Ha ancora senso, oggi, il dibattito classico sul libero arbitrio, frutto più di preoccupazioni teologiche che non di dilemmi morali? Perché i filosofi, e sovente persino gli scienziati, considerano il cervello un rozzo substrato materiale, che senza l’apporto dell’homunculus non sembra rivestire alcun ruolo ai fini della scelta e della libera decisione? È ancora possibile sostenere la tesi della consapevolezza dell’agire volontario, se esistono prove di processi determinanti inconsci in aree corticali? “Coscienza” e “volontà” sono stati tra di loro inscindibili? Sono alcuni dei quesiti al centro di questo studio, che si propone di offrire un contributo al dibattito attuale su intenzioni, decisioni e azioni, facendo emergere il ruolo dei meccanismi corticali coinvolti nell’atto volontario e consapevole, con particolare riferimento ai risultati delle recenti ricerche neuroscientifiche, che hanno rivitalizzato la discussione sul tema avviata negli anni Ottanta dagli esperimenti pionieristici di Benjamin Libet.
