Lieu paradisiaque sur le rivage de la Méditerranée, avec une vue enchanteresse sur la baie de Roquebrune, le site de Cap Moderne est également un concentré d’architecture d’avant-garde. Au fil du temps, entre la fin des années 1920 et le début des années 1950, des personnalités aussi diverses et attachantes que la designer irlandaise Eileen Gray et son compagnon Jean Badovici, le plombier couvreur niçois Thomas Rebutato et sa famille, l’architecte Le Corbusier et sa femme Yvonne s’installent sur ce morceau de terre loin de toute urbanisation. Chacun y construit un lieu adapté à ses besoins, du plus moderne au plus minimal, l’ensemble finissant par constituer un environnement harmonieux au cœur duquel le bar-restaurant « l’Étoile de mer » offre à tous un rendez-vous convivial où se nouent de nombreuses amitiés. Avec les cinq Unités de camping conçues par Le Corbusier – qui y édifia son Cabanon – le microcosme s’ouvrait aussi aux vacanciers de passage.

In 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well.This book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre.
