In the 1990s, James Benning's films were characterized primarily by an ongoing investigation of the relationship between the image and the (spoken or written) word. This 2-disc set features the two key works representing the peak of this ""text-image film"" period. In Deseret Benning (by way of the New York Times) retells the history of America's Mormon State Utah through spectacular black & white and color images. Art and landscape join as one in Benning's following film Four Corners, which serves as both a tribute to the famous region in the USA where four states converge and a portrait of four very different artists. C'est l'oeuvre d'un véritable indépendant, celle d'un artiste qui depuis 1971 tourne seul, avec son Nagra et sa Bolex 16mm, d'abord dans son Midwest natal, puis dans l'Ouest américain où il habite depuis 1987, non loin de la prestigieuse université CalArts où il dispense un cours théorique et pratique intitulé ""Looking and Listening"". Bien que largement méconnue en France, l'oeuvre de James Benning est l'une des plus importantes du cinéma contemporain. Née du cinéma expérimental et du courant ""structurel"" en particulier, elle a évolué dans les années 1990 vers une forme inédite et singulière qui tient à égale distance le documentaire et la fiction, se donnant pour uniques principes l'observation rigoureuse et l'expérience patiente des paysages américains. Mais sous la splendeur des ciels californiens, c'est la violence de l'Histoire qu'il fait voir et entendre. Celle de la classe ouvrière, des Indiens, des Mormons, des natifs et des migrants. Celle de la culture, de l'urbanisation et de la désertification des terres. Une histoire populaire des États-Unis. "

"Separated by a generation, American artists James Benning (b. 1942) and Sharon Lockhart (b. 1964) often cite each other's films as an influence on their own work. Benning has made a career of investigating the structure of film itself and rethinking the use of duration and sound. Lockhart elevates ordinary moments and often engages with communities in the creation of long-term projects. Both artists' work illustrates the importance of close observation and the evolving urban landscape. Over Time, first presented at the Milwaukee Art Museum's Herzfeld Center for Photography and Media Arts, pairs works from both Benning and Lockhart with a collaborative, almost stream-of-consciousness text. Marrying works from throughout each of their careers serves to highlight the artists' trajectories in film and video, photography, found sculpture, and the subtle art of observation. The result is a profound conversation between two accomplished artists that highlights how slow, studied examination and reflection can deepen and enrich often overlooked, everyday experience"--
