Abstract

"This book will report on specific biofortification of edible crops using modern biotechnology and omics technologies in their broad and targeted sense. This discipline is attracting the interests of the scientific community who are involved in the development of novel biofortified edible crops, describing how the modern biotechnological tools and omics technologies can be used to improve the nutritional characteristics and nutritional health benefits of edible plants focusing on vitamins and minerals. Some work have been published on phytonutrients enhancement of crops, but few work reported on vitamins and minerals. This book will include, but is not limited to, modification and enhancement of edible crops at the molecular level, frequently dubbed as "modern biotechnology" or "Omics technologies". This book will also concentrate on recent developments of biotechnology used in edible development and will present biotechnology and omics as provider of powerful and useful tools, in a continuum of technical evolution that contributes or could contribute to the improvement of nutritional quality of edible crops"--

Abstract

Increased world population, decreased water supply, and climate change all put stresses on the global food supply. An exploration of the challenges and possible solutions to improve yields of the main crops, such as cereals, roots, tubers, and grasses, Omics Technologies and Crop Improvement reviews data on food sciences and omics. The book covers modern omic technologies such as nutrigenomics and metagenomics. It provides a detailed examination of how omics can help crop science and horticulture and introduces the benefits of using these technologies to increase crop yields and other features such as resistance and nutritional values. The book highlights crop improvements such as increased yield, drought resistance, disease resistance, and value-added performance through a non-transgenic format. It explores how the different omics technologies, especially the most recent ones (proteomics, metabolomics, nutrigenomics, ionomics, and metagenomics) would be used to improve the quantitative and qualitative features of crop plants.

Abstract

The elapsing time from producer to consumer has significantly increased as a result of food marketing and trade globalization. Consequently, maintaining quality along the food value chain is becoming a significant challenge. Postharvest losses are considered a major component of food loss and waste in the supply chain from farmers to consumers, due to improper handling, storage, transport, preservation techniques and spoilage. Postharvest science aims to extend the shelf life of fresh and perishable commodities, and to reduce heavy losses, thereby contributing to food security. While significant progresses have been made in postharvest preservation and shelf-life extension, the continuous development of emerging technologies have changed our vision on postharvest science. Furthermore, recent advancements in molecular engineering of horticultural crops for quality improvement; the development of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics have led to a better understanding of the physiology and the biochemistry of the senescence processes, resulting in better preservation and improved production of fresh crops. This two-volume work focuses on innovative technologies that extend and preserve shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Volume 1 offers a review on the state-of-the-art modern technologies in the postharvest filed. The accompanying Volume 1 explores advanced and novel technologies after harvest, particularly the application of nanotechnologies to packaging materials.

Abstract

"Fungi serve as partners of plants that can bolster disease resistance and improve crop yields while reducing the need for artificial inputs; as pests that can cause significant diseases of major crops; and as valuable products with nutrient content and low input requirements. This new textbook on mycoagroecology introduces basic concepts of ecology, mycology, and systems of agriculture. It combines this information into an understanding of mycoagroecology, highlighting various roles of fungi in agriculture. This textbook is for students in plants sciences and agriculture departments and contains beautiful color illustrations throughout"--
