Abstract

(Bron: auteur)

Abstract

This thesis contains an analysis of the Middle Dutch text Die Wrake van Ragisel. This manuscript dates from the fourteenth century and is considered to indicate the beginning of the development of Middle Dutch novels containing the theme of Arthur and his knights. The analysis, though, is a structuralist study of the narrative structure, which is, in contrast to the manuscript, a fairly modern theory. Vertelduivels (2005) is used as a guideline for the clarification of the structuralist narratology and later on for the analysis itself. Histoire, récit and narration are addressed consecutively while paying attention to the subdivisions to expose the depth structure. Below a few of the results. Histoire is divided into events, actants and setting. The events include an almost perfect overlap between story and plot. The history consists of twelve sequences, namely the twelve chapters. Concerning the actants, Walewein fulfills the role of subject and has a lot of helpers and opponents. The characters are rather predictable and lack in psychological depth. Time, part of the second division, récit, accelerates and slows down continuously. It contains multiple flashbacks and not a single flash forward. The events are described in a singulative manner, except for one event, which is described multiple times and therefore is repetitive. The characterization is both direct and indirect, the narrator and the characters are responsible. The focalization at last is a result of an extern, single, simultaneous, retrospective, distant, omniscient, ironic perspective. The most superficial level, narration, displays the relationship between the narrator and what is told. In this case the narrator is extradiegetic, heterodiegetic and overt. The speech representation makes use of summary, less purely diegetic, indirect content paraphrase, indirect discourse, mimetic to some degree and direct speech. It is most definitely possible to subject a Middle Dutch manuscript to a rather modern theory, such as the structuralist approach of narratology. The process of the analyzation is even quite unambiguous.
