De auteur onderzoekt de vrouwenbeweging binnen de Arabische wereld: over de positie van de moslimvrouw doen immers vele clichés de ronde en vaak wordt de islam aangemerkt als oorzaak van de onderdrukking: 'De moslimvrouw wordt onderdrukt. De oorzaak ervan ligt in de islam. Bevrijd de vrouw van de islam en alles wordt opgelost.' Dit is de teneur van het debat over de situatie van de moslima, of ze nu in Brussel woont, in Parijs of in Kandahar. Wat we helemaal niet te weten komen is hoe men in de moslimwereld omgaat met kwesties die in het Westen zoveel stof doen opwaaien. In deze publicatie laat Bendadi zien dat de realiteit veel complexer is. Ze neemt de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het feminisme in de Arabische wereld onder de loep en onderzoekt de vrouwenbeweging in Egypte, waar het feminisme ooit begon; Marokko, herkomstland van vele immigranten; en in Frankrijk en België. Hoe denkt men in de Arabische wereld over de positie van de vrouw? Draait de vrouwenbeweging om dezelfde thema's als het Westers feminisme? En hoe beïnvloeden die Arabische visie en de leefomstandigheden in het Westen de opinie ten aanzien van de vrouw in moslimgemeenschappen in Europa? De visies van vooraanstaande figuren uit de vrouwenbeweging, intellectuelen en gewone vrouwen worden aaneengeregen tot een compleet en genuanceerd verhaal

Textile is a vector of identity - something more important than ever in times of war and crisis in particular. It is connected to the body it covers like a second skin. It both conceals and reveals, and contains a history and iconography whose roots often lie deep in a culture's customs and traditions. As part of its extramural programme, and in collaboration with award-winning photographer Mashid Mohadjerin and journalist Samira Bendadi, Antwerp Fashion Museum (MoMu) have created a new exhibition and accompanying publication on the importance of fabric and clothing to issues of public concern today, such as migration, resistance, tradition, spirituality and decolonisation. The focus is on nine stories of people whom curators Bendadi and Mohadjerin - in whose own personal stories migration features prominently - met during their travels to Paris, Antwerp, Lebanon, Africa, Morocco and Iran. Sometimes the stories are warm and moving; at other times they are tough and heart-wrenching. In them, textile embodies the ideas and emotions coupled with forced or voluntary departure, the yearning for what has been lost, letting go and holding on.
