De Caravaggio à Giordano. Le Caravage séjourne à Naples en 1606-1607 puis en 1609-1610 et conditionne fondamentalement la nouvelle production picturale de la région. Naples est le fief caravagesque où travaillent l'Espagnol Ribera et ses élèves de 1616 à 1682. Ses compositions poussent la peinture napolitaine vers un réalisme plus rude et plus violent encore que celui du Caravage. Gentileschi développe, à partir des oeuvres du Caravage, un style personnel dans une version adoucie et très raffinée. Pretti saisit le moment au sommet de son intensité dramatique. Salvador Rosa, traite un paysage préromantique, évocateur des aspects pittoresques de la nature. Carraciolo adhère aussi très vite aux expériences du Caravage.
