In nature, urban groundwater results in multiple processes, including climatic, geological, geomorphological, geochemical, ecotoxicological, and hydraulic processes, in addition to sanitation, all of which sustain varied ecological services. Urban development profoundly impacts hydrological systems, particularly in the invisible component of the water cycle, the groundwater. That impact was perceived a considerable while in the past, and the initial focus was drawn to societal roles in the development of urbanisation and the consequent contamination and pollution of hydrosystems. Additional issues in sustainable water resource management and hydrological cycle comprehension are added by urbanisation. The Special Issue highlights the presentation and discussion of model urban studies and reflections that describe the current state-of-the-art methods on challenges and emerging fields related to the mapping, characterisation, assessment, mitigation, and protection of sustainable groundwater systems in peri-urban and urban areas. In the current year, 2022, World Water Day was dedicated to groundwater, and the process of making the invisible visible. This Special Issue offers a set of papers that promote reflections, methodologies, and learned studies on the importance of fresh water in urban areas.

This book comprises the selected papers from the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. The volume is of interest to all researchers and practitioners in the fields of Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Hydrochemistry, Water Resources and Hydrologic Engineering. Water is a dynamic, finite, and vulnerable but resilient natural resource to be protected in an environmentally sustainable manner. Water systems in different frameworks requires a comprehensive understanding of climatology, geology, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry, hydrodynamics, and surface hydrology. In addition, it is highlighted the role of the variability and climate change in water systems. Furthermore, water has a vital significance to the entire socio-economic sector. This volume offers an overview of the state-of-the-art related to water science and technology in model regions in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and America, but mainly focuses on the Mediterranean environment and surrounding regions. It gives new insights on characterisation, evaluation, quality, management, protection, modelling on environmental hydrology, groundwater, hydrochemistry, sustainable water resources studies and hydrologic engineering approaches by international researchers. Main topics include: 1. Hydrology, Climatology and Water-Related Ecosystems 2. Hydrochemistry and Isotopic Hydrology 3. Groundwater Assessment and Management: mapping, exploration, abstraction and modelling 4. Water Resources Sustainability and Climate Change 5. Hydrologic Engineering and Urban Groundwater.

This book is based on the accepted papers for presentation at the 2nd MedGU Annual Meeting, Marrakesh 2022. It presents a series of newest research studies that are nowadays relevant mainly to Middle East, Mediterranean region, and Africa. It includes major subjects related to hydrology, hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry including, but not limited to, isotope hydrology, groundwater models, water resources and systems, and related subjects. It also includes research studies on biogeochemistry which mainly focus on the interactions between life and the chemical cycles in the Earth system. Some case studies on geobiology and geoecology investigate the structure and function of geoecosystems, their components, and their environment. The book also presents major subjects related to atmospheric, oceanic, meteorology and climatic science with recent developments in the field. By cutting across these traditional subject boundaries, this book brings together the major elements that are important for understanding the weather, climate, water systems, and geoecosystems in these regions.
