In de vroege jaren zeventig, toen bijna geen arts of ziekenhuis hiertoe bereid was, begonnen enkele pioniers van het VU-ziekenhuis in Amsterdam met het bieden van medische hulp aan transgenders. De genderpoli ontwikkelde zich van een wekelijks spreekuur voor geslachtshormonen tot een volwaardige, internationaal gerespecteerde kliniek voor transgenderzorg. Inmiddels hebben ongeveer 10.000 mensen er een genderbevestigende behandeling ondergaan en is het VUmc toonaangevend binnen het wetenschappelijke vakgebied.
