Abstract

The senses are a vital source of knowledge about the objects and events in the world, as well as for insights into our private sensations and feelings. Each sense is unique, in terms of subjective feelings and regarding the array of information that it yields, yet each sense interacts with the others to produce experiences that cannot be replicated by only a single sense. Our sensory perception reflects our personal history, our culture and the way that our brain has learned to combine sensory inputs. This book is a major new multidisciplinary work exploring the relationship between art and the various senses. It starts with the 'body' senses, looking at the relationship between vision and art, touch and sculpture, as well as exploring the multisensory interactions between the senses. It then moves on to the chemical senses of taste and smell, again examining how these senses can be influenced by their interactions with other senses such as sound-the effects of music on eating, or the effect of auditory feedback on perceived taste and quality of food. The authors also explore hearing and music, including a look at the creative process in improvisation, musical tension, and audio/visual interactions as well as the link between art and dance and the senses, covering perceptions of art, and hypotheses linking mirror neurons to artistic appreciation. The final part of the book looks at the condition of synaesthesia, and what happens when communication between the senses doesn't work as planned. Including contributions from specialists across the science, humanities, arts, and even the culinary world, this book is the most comprehensive and detailed exploration of this topic ever produced.
