Robust architecture is designed to meet needs; its structures are sufficient, resilient and suited to the location. It embraces the potential of simplicity, traditional building methods and alternative ways of building sustainable architecture, with an emphasis on local building materials, solid craftsmanship, proven construction methods and user participation. Its design strategies, combined with state-of-the-art planning tools and research findings, look ahead to a climate-positive future. The book gives detailed information on the concepts behind Robust Architecture and Low-Tech Design. It illuminates various strategies and demonstrates how they can be easily implemented. Examples of realised projects with very different demands and requirement profiles show how straightforward robust building can be.

Facades determine the appearance of a building. Thus they have a very important role to play in architecture. At the same time, the building envelope has important functions to fulfill, including lighting, weatherproofing, thermal isolation, load distribution, and sound insulation, to name only the most important. In the last fifteen years, facades have become significantly more complex. For example, ""intelligent, ??? climate-active facades use self-regulating systems to respond to changing light and weather conditions. This book demonstrates the principles of facade construction. This book demonstrates the principles of facade construction. Guidelines are suggested for good detailing. The installation procedures are described for the most common materials - glass, wood, steel, concrete, and aluminum. Numerous drawings made specially for the book explain the principles of the individual types of facade which are then illustrated with built examples.

Summary: Energy is everything - and we are used to this in the means of energy reduction for our buildings: climate design and climate engineering is nowadays standard in the design process. The more successful we are in this, the less energy we need to run the building during its useful life (which is good) and we can focus instead on an additional aspect: the embodied energy - the energy we need for the material production and construction process. Interestingly, the reduction in energy used in a climate-efficient building during its lifetime is equal to the energy consumption necessary to produce and install the building. This aspect triggers us to reconsider the design potentials of focusing on less energy in the construction.
