Abstract

`Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics: Foundations and Applications' builds from basic principles to advanced techniques, and covers the major phenomena, methods, and results of time-dependent systems. It is a pedagogic introduction, a comprehensive reference manual, and an original research monograph. Uniquely, the book treats time-dependent systems by close analogy with their static counterparts, with most of the familiar results of equilibrium thermodynamicsand statistical mechanics being generalized and applied to the non-equilibrium case. The book is notable for its un

Abstract

Quantum Statistical Mechanics in Classical Phase Space offers not just a new computational approach to condensed matter systems, but also a unique conceptual framework for understanding the quantum world and collective molecular behaviour. A formally exact transformation, this revolutionary approach goes beyond the quantum perturbation of classical condensed matter to applications that lie deep in the quantum regime.

Abstract

Entropy Beyond the Second Law presents a coherent formulation of all aspects of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics with entropy as the unifying theme. This includes formulating equilibrium theory and explaining the role of the Second Law in establishing the equilibrium state. It also establishes the foundations of non-equilibrium theory by generalizing the concept of entropy in an appropriate way. Finally, it addresses the relationship between classical and quantum statistical mechanics by invoking the collapse of the wave function into entropy states. A secondary purpose is to increase the understanding of entropy and the Second Law, and to correct misapprehensions and errors that have arisen over the years.

Abstract

This book establishes the foundations of non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics in order to support students and academics in developing and building their understanding. The formal theory is derived from first principles by mathematical analysis, with concrete physical interpretations and worked examples throughout. It explains the central role of entropy; it's relation to the probability operator and the generalisation to transitions, as well as providing first principles derivation of the von Neumann trace form, the Maxwell-Boltzmann form and the Schrödinger equation.

Abstract

Entropy Beyond the Second Law presents a coherent formulation of all aspects of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics with entropy as the unifying theme. This second edition includes the novel entropic treatment of Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluidity, and high temperature superconductivity. The new physical insights and the quantitative agreement with experimental measurement provide concrete examples of the universal approach based on entropy advocated in the book. Thermodynamics and statistical mechanics are important subjects, and students, academics, and researchers require the fundamental concepts to be clearly and concisely presented, as part of a unified whole, and the mathematical derivations to be explained with detailed physical explanation and applications.
