After studying at the Catholic University of Chile, Alejandro Aravena (born 1967) established his own firm in 1994. Since 2006, Aravena has served as Executive Director of ELEMENTAL S.A., a non profit company with social interest working in projects of infrastructure, transportation, public space and housing, partnering with the Catholic University of Chile and COPEC (Chilean Oil Company). His architectural projects include the Easter Island High School, a Montessori School, the Garib House, a Medical School, the Siamese Towers, the Pirehueico House, the School of Architecture, the Verbo Divino School all in Chile.

What began as an academic initiative to improve the quality of life of poor strata of the population has meanwhile become a professional “do tank” offering services that cover the entire spectrum of urban development. Alejandro Aravena (*1967 in Santiago de Chile) founded Elemental in 2001 in his hometown with the goal of alleviating social deprivation directly instead of hoping for a balance of income relations. Besides building public facilities and public housing, Elemental also develops new approaches for the reorganization of resources and the potential of cities by means of projects devoted to infrastructure and transportation. This publication documents the social activity and history of the international architectural team and sheds light on its financing strategies, for example through participative building.

Setting new developments in digital graphic construction methods against the backdrop of time-tested design principles results in extraordinary approaches to the design of self-supporting structures. Using their Armadillo Vault, which was recognised at the Biennale 2016 in Venice, the Block Research Group at ETH Zürich describes their research, development processes and visions of resource-saving, refined and steel-free support structures. Fundamental to their work is an intensive exploration of principles. The Block Research Group is the DETAIL Reader Prize Winner for 2016.

Wohnen ist individuell: Jeder hat andere Vorstellungen und Wünsche vom Wohnen und durch die Art zu Wohnen äußert sich sein Lebensstil. Wohnen heißt "zuhause" sein, wo man sich im Idealfall wohlfühlt. Zum Thema Wohnen existieren zahlreiche Studien über Standards, Entwicklungen und Trends, die die Bedürfnisse von Menschen analysieren und vergleichen. Mit den Bedürfnissen aber wandeln sich im Laufe der Jahre auch die Standards und Trends. Und auch der globale und demografische Wandel unserer Gesellschaft ändert die Wohnformen, Flexibilität wird zu einem maßgeblichen Kriterium. Zum Thema Wohnen gehört aber auch die Einbindung in die Umgebung. Insbesondere in Städten leben viele Menschen auf engem Raum, es gibt wenig individuelle Freiflächen und viele gemeinschaftlich genutzte Zonen.
