ABSTRACT Recent kinds of sustainable tourism hold promises of more respectful travelling in terms of ecology and interpersonal and intercultural relations. This thesis, mainly based on the outcomes of a self- ethnography completed in Belgium and South Africa, looks critically at these promises, which often boiled down to catchphrases such as “meeting locals” or “authentic travel”. The author, a journalist by profession, engineered a 3-week group tour to South Africa, in collaboration with the staff of tour operator Joker and its sister organisation, Karavaan. The tour titled “In the footsteps of Nelson Mandela”, departing from my long-lasting fascination for Nelson Mandela, was informed by scholarly writing on tourism, in particular, new forms of tourism, variably referred to as ecotourism, cultural tourism, sustainable or alternative tourism. It delves into issues of sustainability and more specifically authenticity, community, the local and shows once implemented and done how ambiguous some of the sector’s claims, as well as academia’s critiques, are. This thesis brings together sector and academia, bridged by a thief in the night, fulfilling his role as a critical participant, not only through his writings, but also by being in the field. I argue that the focus on the performance of tourists – studying all actors, human and non- human materialities alike – can help us gain a better understanding of sustainable travel in practice and lead both to more fine-grained ethnographies and more helpful recommendations to the sector.
