Abstract

The current housing crisis calls for creative solutions, but the primacy of the market seems to leave little room for truly innovative initiatives. Between 1968 and 1980, by contrast, there were plenty of experiments in housing design, made possible in part by the then Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning. They led to a wide range of alternatives to the uniformity of the mass housing of the time. This edition of DASH (Delft Architectural Studies on Housing) takes the historical Experimental Housing Programme as an inspiring starting point in a search for alternative housing forms, typologies and construction methods. It highlights appealing Dutch examples, such as Aldo van Eyck and Theo Bosch's ground-breaking Onder de Bogen in Zwolle and Abe Bonnema's Vier Vierkanten in Alkmaar, complemented by exceptional examples from abroad: from Sweden, Great Britain, Spain, Australia, Israel, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Abstract

In the emergent economies, the acute shortage of affordable housing is responsible for a gigantic building production, which is not without its problems. Standard solutions are applied on a large scale that seem to bypass local cultural practices. The import in Africa of mass housing models from abroad is an example of this. DASH Global Housing explores the field of tension between the desired mass production and solutions that are tailored to local conditions. How can new megacities do justice to existing social and economic structures, local production techniques and individual housing preferences? What is the standard and what the ideal? DASH Global Housing includes essays by Tom Avermaete and Nelson Mota, and interviews with Balkrishna Doshi and Go West. The planning documentation presents projects by Charles Correa, Elemental, Hassan Fathy and others.
