Abstract

Generating form is one of the most fundamental aspects of architectural education and practice. While new computational tools are enabling ever more unpredictable forms, critics argue that this leads to a disconnection between architectural output and its context. This attractive, pocket-sized book uses 11 different architectural projects to explore how generative design processes can integrate digital as well as physical design tools and techniques to produce innovative forms that cohere with structural and material principles, performance and context. Illustrated with drawings, computer images and models, this stimulating, accessible handbook of ideas provides a guide for students as well as an inspiration for practising architects.

Abstract

This is a new title in the successful Architecture and Design Experiments Series edited by the author of Modular Structures in design and architecture and Digital Manufacturing in design and architecture. Computational Architecture showcases many form studies using digital tools and techniques like twisting, lofting, triangulating, drilling, knotting and framing. These techniques are used systematically to explore spatial, structural and geometrical conditions, leading to the emergence of abstract prototypes. As a second step each prototype is used to generate architectural solutions, enriched with data from site analysis and specific building programs.

Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are currently making a dynamic appearance in the architectural realm. Social media are being bombarded by word-to-image/image-to-image/word-to-3D/image-to-3D illustrations of fictive buildings generated by 2D or 3D AI algorithms. However, these “designs”, while visually appealing, have initiated a debate about their substance and the impact they have on conventional design methods. This book investigates the integration of generative ai-assisted methods into architectural design education and practice, its influence on design aesthetics, and its potential to enhance creativity and critical thinking in the architectural community. The book highlights the advantages and challenges of the utilisation of AI image generator tools in the architectural design process. It includes 10-12 hands-on case studies on how AI can contribute to a creative design process as well as handbook instructions on how to utilise AI in order to achieve the required results

Abstract

From leaves to liquids, caves to crystal formations, nature has always been a major source of inspiration for architects. This book examines how nature can act as a precedent for design solutions through twelve case studies. Packed with computer drawings, sketches, models, and photographs, this will be an ideal resource of ideas for students in their studio work, as well as for practicing architects. Abstract

Presenting the state-of-the-art in sustainable retrofits in post war residential towers, this book captures and re-informs the current intense refurbishing process that is taking place in Britain, which is part of a global phenomenon happening all over the world, as cities upgrade their building stock in an attempt to comply with governmental emission reduction targets. The authors present inspections of 20 sustainably retrofitted social housing towers, analysing their aesthetic and technical modifications, as well as the shifts occurring in their social structure. The authors use over 200 full colour plans, elevations, photographs, maps and illustrations to beautifully support the statistical and analytical information collected. Finally they include interviews with some of the architects who designed the retrofits, residents and key stakeholders to inform the conclusions.

Abstract

This book examines the possibilities emerging for design and architecture by the influence of novel computer aided design and digital manufacturing tools and techniques. The studies shown here are focusing in the realisation of the digitally conceived structures into 1/1 physical prototypes. Thus, an index of insights concerning manufacturing techniques in association with structure, material, detailing and design arose. The used structural techniques are divided in five categories, which are emphasized trough out the books formation: cross segmentation, accumulation, frameworks, loops and foldings. Generative CAD tools, algorithms and scripting applications where not only used as design components, but also as devices which helped to rationalise and systematize the production process of complex geometries. Asterios (born 1974) studied architecture in the Aristotle Univ. of Thessaloniki, the RWTH (Aachen) and the Staedelschule (Frankfurt). He was a partner in the architectural practice b&k+ (Cologne, 2001- 04), and then worked for VMX architects (Amsterdam) until 2005. He founded the architecture and research laboratory a3lab Frankfurt - Thessaloniki, in the same year. Since then he has been practicing architecture and design publishing, exhibiting, winning prizes and realizing projects throughout Europe. Teaching and lecturing experiences include AdbK Nuremberg, TU Darmstadt, the Univ. of Thessaloniki, the Univ. of Bielefeld, the Columbia Univ. and the Staedelschule. He is currently Visiting Associate Professor in the Lebanese American University. Quatrième de couverture site interne www.bispublishers
