Abstract

The world we live in becomes smaller and smaller due to globalisation that causes a worldwide interconnectedness. Therefore, there is a need for bringing international competences to the classroom in order prepare students for global citizenship. Literature study shows, however, that there is still a shortage of available material teachers can consult to teach and improve students' international competences. This research is therefore based on the question how teachers can work on international competences in the second grade ASOI, and more specifically, how they can work on international competences by exposing gender stereotypes during the English literature class. To achieve this, a lesson series on gender stereotypes is developed for the same target group. This lesson kit can serve as a source of inspiration for teachers to teach international competences in their own class, as professionals in the field find that this lesson series is well-balanced and contains learning activities that work on these competences in a creative and efficient way. Abstract

Flipped Learning - ook wel bekend als flipping the classroom - heeft als uitgangspunt het zo efficiënt mogelijk gebruiken van de beschikbare face-to-face klastijd voor activerend en diepgaand leren. Hiervoor wordt de eerste kennismaking met nieuwe leerstof (die traditioneel in de klas gebeurt) verplaatst naar buiten de klas: leerlingen bekijken bijvoorbeeld thuis voor de les een video of lezen een tekst waarin de nieuwe leerstof uitgelegd wordt. Met de voorkennis uit die voortaak en met eventuele vragen of problemen komen leerlingen vervolgens naar de klas om daar dan met de leraar als coach op een actieve en dynamische manier te werken aan de diepere verwerking van die leerstof (die in een traditioneel model thuis zou gebeuren). Abstract

The first of two goals of this thesis is to find a way to prepare pupils of the seventh year of vocational education for a school trip to London in an instructive but pleasant way. Next to that, I will also try to find a way to link lessons about London as much as possible to the curriculum to create constructive and sustainable lessons for the teachers and students who face the same challenge as I do now. In order to find an answer to these two problems, I followed a series of steps. Firstly, I did research and absorbed as much of the various aspects of the subject I was about to teach, namely London. I will explain these aspects shortly. Next, I got to know my target audience, namely the pupils, and conducted a survey on the pupils' interests on the subject. Lastly, after doing the research, I will have enough information to create a series of lessons. I will do this, keeping in mind that I can link the lessons to the curriculum and attainment targets. My final paper deals with the use of drama to improve English skills. Abstract

Since detective novels are a major part of English literature, I think that it's important that youngsters who dislike reading and who are more attracted to flashing images and the world wide web, get to know more about the genre. Pupils are probably more acquainted with Dutch detective series as Witse, Flikken, Baantjer, Code 37 etc. These mystery television series are popular among youngsters. So why couldn't they read and watch English variants? Maybe youngsters prefer the Belgian realisations, since the environment is more familiar. Maybe the classic detective stories are associated with 'old' and 'boring'. That's why I've created attractive methodological material for the second, third and fourth year of secondary school. This dissertation contains material about Sherlock Holmes for English classes. In general, the material is created for pupils with an intermediate level. But, this does not mean elementary pupils can't take advantage of the material to learn English in a fun way. The material for reading, viewing, speaking and listening skills provides exercises for both weaker and stronger pupils. Abstract

This paper is a research on how pupils of the seventh year of vocational education can be prepared for their school trip to London. Herefore, new classroom material was created for the pupils of Don Bosco Groenveld Heverlee, in consideration with their English teacher. Beforehand, some research was done, such as an analysis of the current material and a comparative study between the material of two schools, observations during the school trip and an inquiry afterwards. These showed that there were some problems that needed to be tackled, for example, the pupils' fear of speaking English before a group or the fact that they needed more practice using pounds and converting money. In that regard, new classroom material has been created in the form of a sheaf with English work sheets, a board game about sightseeing and a PowerPoint-presentation with a quiz. This classroom material includes more speaking activities, more exercises practising converting money, Tube travelling and map reading, and more historical information. (Bron: auteur)

Abstract

Door ontwikkelingen in de huidige samenleving, wordt het steeds belangrijker om jongeren internationale competenties bij te brengen.Zowel de wetenschappelijke literatuur als de eindtermen Engels kampen met een tekort aan concrete richtlijnen en gepast praktijkmateriaal waarmee leerkrachten aan de slag kunnen om binnen hun lessen rond de internationale competentie te werken. Dit struikelblok zag ik als een mogelijkheid om mijn steentje bij te dragen en op die manier leerkrachten Engels te helpen binnen dit proces.Allereerst wordt er aan de hand van een grondige literatuurstudie besproken wat internationale competentie nu precies inhoudt en welke werkvormen, methodes en onderwerpen optimaal zijn om deze doelstelling te realiseren bij leerlingen.Om het tekort aan concrete richtlijnen en gepast praktijkmateriaal op te vullen, werkte ik een aantal lesontwerpen uit die een basis kunnen vormen voor leerkrachten Engels die de internationale competentie van hun leerlingen willen bevorderen.
