Abstract

A rigorous, step-by-step approach to Evaluating and designing software measuresHundreds of software measures have been proposed to the industry over the past forty years, but limitations in their design mean that most of them are of insufficient use to practitioners. So how can practitioners recognize which measures are sound and useful for decision-making? Moreover, for those who have to design new software measures, what must they do to build sound ones?Software Metrics and Software Metrology looks at the fundamentals of the design of a measurement method, which forms the foundation of the measures available in the sciences and in engineering. Alain Abran provides a step-by-step approach to both analyzing the design of current software measures and designing new, robust software measures for a specific business or engineering need. He draws upon years of experience to ensure that software engineers and managers will apply the best practices in software measurement-and therefore be equipped to respond to the most demanding customers and feel supported by senior executives.. Presents the key concepts that dictate whether a software measure's design is sufficiently strong. Features several case studies analyzing strengths and weaknesses in the design of some of the software measures most widely used or quoted. Describes how lessons learned led to the design of the COSMIC - ISO 19761 method for the measurement of the functional size of software, from its initial prototype to its adoption by the ISO as an international standard. Illustrates day-to-day software measurement issues that have not been seriously addressed, from convertibility across measurement designs to measurement standard etalons. Includes chapter exercises for classroom useSoftware Metrics and Software Metrology is meant for software quality specialists and process improvement analysts and managers, in software organizations of all sizes. In addition, this book introduces many of the theoretical concepts and references needed by professionals, managers, and students to help them understand the fundamentals of the identification and evaluation of software development and maintenance processes, as well as improvements to them.

Abstract

Software projects are often late and over-budget and this leads to major problems for software customers. Clearly, there is a serious issue in estimating a realistic, software project budget. Furthermore, generic estimation models cannot be trusted to provide credible estimates for projects as complex as software projects. This book presents a number of examples using data collected over the years from various organizations building software. It also presents an overview of the non-for-profit organization, which collects data on software projects, the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group. This data collection is based on the ISO standards for measuring the functional size of software. Additional features of this book are: . End-of-chapter exercises and 'terms assignments'. 100+ figures to illustrate concepts presented throughout the book. Examples with industry data. References to the ISO standards and the standards of the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG) In summary, Dr. Abran instructs readers how to build their own estimation models from the data of an organization using a sounds statistical basis, and how to focus on the quality of the estimation models built.

Abstract

The only authoritative reference to provide a management perspective of software maintenanceSoftware maintenance accounts for 60-90% of software life-cycle costs, and unfortunately, very little attention is given to software maintenance education, training, and research. Now, two experts in the field explain how understanding software maintenance, implementing best practices, and improving its processes can help software managers to dramatically cut costs.Software Maintenance Management explores the domain of software maintenance management and provides road maps for improving software maintenance organizations. It describes full maintenance maturity models organized by levels 1, 2, and 3, which allow for benchmarking and continuous improvement paths. Goals for each key practice area are also provided, and the model presented is fully aligned with the architecture and framework of software development maturity models of CMMI and ISO 15504.Complete with case studies, figures, tables, and graphs, Software Maintenance Management fills the need for a comprehensive and authoritative reference on the subject for maintenance managers, software managers, systems analysts, quality managers, and quality analysts. It alsoserves as a valuable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in softwareengineering, software maintenance, software process improvement, and software benchmarking.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of two joint events - the International Workshop on Software Measurement, IWSM 2009 and the International Conference on Software Process and Product Measurement, Mensura 2009, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in November 2009. The 24 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions for inclusion in the book. This book considers issues such as the applicability of measures and metrics to software, the efficiency of measurement programs in industry and the theoretical foundations of software engineering.

Abstract

Software Quality Assurance in Large Scale and Complex Software-intensive Systems presents novel and high-quality research related approaches that relate the quality of software architecture to system requirements, system architecture and enterprise-architecture, or software testing. Modern software has become complex and adaptable due to the emergence of globalization and new software technologies, devices and networks. These changes challenge both traditional software quality assurance techniques and software engineers to ensure software quality when building today (and tomorrow’s) adaptive, context-sensitive, and highly diverse applications. This edited volume presents state of the art techniques, methodologies, tools, best practices and guidelines for software quality assurance and offers guidance for future software engineering research and practice. Each contributed chapter considers the practical application of the topic through case studies, experiments, empirical validation, or systematic comparisons with other approaches already in practice. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to: quality attributes of system/software architectures; aligning enterprise, system, and software architecture from the point of view of total quality; design decisions and their influence on the quality of system/software architecture; methods and processes for evaluating architecture quality; quality assessment of legacy systems and third party applications; lessons learned and empirical validation of theories and frameworks on architectural quality; empirical validation and testing for assessing architecture quality. Focused on quality assurance at all levels of software design and development Covers domain-specific software quality assurance issues e.g. for cloud, mobile, security, context-sensitive, mash-up and autonomic systems Explains likely trade-offs from design decisions in the context of complex software system engineering and quality assurance Includes practical case studies of software quality assurance for complex, adaptive and context-critical systems
