Bilingual education is one of the fastest growing disciplines within applied linguistics. This book includes the work of 20 specialists working in various educational contexts across Europe, Latin America and North America to create a volume which is both comprehensive in scope and multidimensional in its coverage of current bilingual initiatives. The central themes of this volume, which draws on past experiences of bilingual education, include issues in language use in classrooms at elementary, secondary and tertiary levels; participant perspectives on bilingual education experiences; and the language needs of bi- and multilingual students in monolingual schools. El bilingüismo es un asunto de considerable interés social, científico y educativo. En tiempos de descentralización, movilización y ubicuidad, los individuos monolingües constituyen una excepción, y entramos cada vez más en contacto con distintas lenguas que nos son útiles o necesarias. En este libro, doce expertos enfocan el bilingüismo en estos distintos escenarios. La primera parte versa sobre el bilingüismo en el aula, tanto en la enseñanza de segundas lenguas como en la enseñanza integrada de la educación escolar bilingüe. Se presentan distintas políticas educativas en España, como la catalana y la andaluza, y sus respuestas a los retos de la sociedad multilingüe. También se ofrece un recorrido por los nuevos planteamientos metodológicos, que se han abierto a la diversidad de conocimientos lingüísticos del alumnado. La segunda parte se ocupa, por un lado, de los procesos individuales del bilingüismo en niños en fase preverbal y del entorno familiar. Por el otro, se presenta la polifonía sociolingüística de una ciudad en el Norte de África, para concluir con una reflexión teórica sobre la híbridización en el contacto de lenguas. En todos estos escenarios subyace un mismo hecho: la facultad humana del lenguaje es una poderosa energeia capaz de generar en nosotros representaciones de dos o más sistemas lingüísticos simultáneamente. Este don de lenguas se manifiesta en diferentes habilidades comunicativas necesarias en cada contexto.
