Steroids: The basic science and clinical aspects covers the modern understanding and clinical use of steroids. The history of steroids is richly immersed and runs long and deep. The modern history of steroids started in the early 20th century, but its use has been traced back to ancient Greece. We start by describing the basic science of steroids. We then describe different clinical situations where steroids play an important role. We hope that this book will contribute further to the literature available about steroids and enables the reader to further understand this interesting and rapidly evolving science.

This book explains the basic science of steroids and is targeted towards professionals engaged in health services. It should be noted that medical science evolves rapidly and some information like the understanding of steroids and their therapeutic use may change with new concepts quickly. Steroids are either naturally occurring or synthetic fat-soluble organic compounds. They are found in plants, animals, and fungi. They mediate a very diverse set of biological responses. The most widespread steroid in the body is cholesterol, an essential component of cell membranes, and the starting point for the synthesis of other steroids. Since the science of steroids has an enormous scope, we decided to put the clinical aspects of steroids in a different book titled "Steroids-Clinical Aspects". The two books complete each other. We hope that the reader will gain valuable information from both books and enrich their knowledge about this fascinating topic.

Complications of pregnancy are health issues that are caused by pregnancy itself. These can happen during or after delivery (obstetric labor complications or puerperal disorders). Complications can be classified as mild, severe, immediate, or long-term health problems. Complications of pregnancy can cause maternal morbidity and mortality. The most common causes of maternal mortality are maternal bleeding, maternal sepsis, hypertensive diseases, obstructed labor, and pregnancy with the consequence of abortion, which includes miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and medical abortion.Health problems can develop during pregnancy, which may be directly related to the pregnancy itself or non obstetric disorders, such as pregnancy complicated by medical diseases. One of the main complications is obstetric abnormalities that increase the risk of morbidity or mortality for the pregnant woman and her fetus. High-risk pregnancy is an indicator of a maternal complication during pregnancy.

This book discusses an important topic in obstetrics, that of multiple pregnancies. Multiple pregnancy may be determined via clinical history, physical pelvic examination, blood test, or pelvic ultrasound. Babies may be delivered vaginally or via Cesarean section and there is the possibility of complications due to early delivery, which may lead to long- or short-term health problems for the infant. This book addresses these issues in four sections that discuss the basic aspects of multiple pregnancies, diagnosis of multiple pregnancy, breastfeeding, and complications related to multiple pregnancies.

Obstetrics is the field that deals with the well-being of the pregnant women as well as the labor and delivery of a healthy baby. Obstetricians work closely as neonatologists who deal with the care of the newborn baby to reduce chances of morbidity and mortality. The objective of obstetrics is to deal with diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy, antenatal care, and prevention of complication, collaborating with midwives to monitor pregnant women in labor, facilitating delivery and performing assisted procedures if needed as episiotomy, forceps delivery, vacuum extraction, and Cesarean section if indicated.
