Abstract

Prepared by the Publications Division of ASCE. A core mission of the American Society of Civil Engineers has always been to share information critical to civil engineers. Today, the journals of ASCE are the media through which civil engineers exchange technical and professional knowledge. Information published in the journals is the archival record of the technical advances of the profession. Authors of articles in ASCE journals include members and non-members, and the community surrounding each journal is international and multidisciplinary. This guide provides information about ASCE's journals program to assist authors in submitting and publishing their research. Topics include: guidelines for publication and types of journal content; ethical standards; ASCE publication policies on peer review, copyright, and permissions and reuse of material; a description of the peer review process; detailed instructions on manuscript preparation and submission; and an explanation of what happens after an article has been accepted. Publishing in ASCE Journals is a key reference for any current or prospective author of articles and other content to be published in ASCE journals.

Abstract

Prepared by the Publications Division of ASCE. The American Society of Civil Engineers supports a robust book-publishing program to provide in-depth information on a variety of topics of interest to civil engineers and allied professionals. Each year, 25 to 30 of the Society's new titles are collections of papers presented at conferences affiliated with ASCE. This guide provides information to conference committees and proceedings editors who are organizing proceedings that will be published by ASCE. This publication describes the ASCE program for publishing proceedings, including the review and approval process and the role of the editor. An overview of the publication path is described, followed by step-by-step recommendations for organizing the process of soliciting, evaluating, reviewing, accepting, and publishing papers in a proceedings. The basics of ASCE's copyright and permissions policies are outlined. Policies for proceedings after publication are covered, including antipiracy efforts, errata, publishing ethics, and the process for discussions and closures. An appendix presents information important to the authors submitting and preparing proceedings papers for publication, such as requirements for copyright, permissions, and formatting the manuscript. Publishing Proceedings with ASCE is a key reference for every committee contemplating a conference with proceedings papers published by ASCE. Revised October 2015.

Abstract

Prepared by the Tsunami Loads and Effects Subcommittee of the Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures Standards Committee of the Codes and Standards Activities Division of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. ASCE 7-16 Tsunami Design Zone Maps for Selected Locations provides detailed maps for 62 locations that fall within the Tsunami Design Zone in the United States. As defined in Chapter 6, "Tsunami Loads and Effects," of Standard ASCE/SEI 7-16, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, the Tsunami Design Zone consists of the land area between a coastline and the inundation limit line, within which structures are analyzed and designed for inundation by the Maximum Considered Tsunami. Engineers can use these maps to determine quickly whether a structure falls within the Tsunami Design Zone, as indicated by red shading. For the purpose of identifying the Tsunami Design Zone, these high-resolution PDF maps are considered equivalent to the results served from the ASCE Tsunami Design Geodatabase, http://asce7tsunami.online, and are produced with the runup, GIS point data, and Tsunami Design Zone data in the Geodatabase. Five U.S. states contain a Tsunami Design Zone: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. A Location Key Plan for each state identifies specific areas that have PDF maps; these Location Key Plans correlate to Figures C6.1-1(a) to (i) in Standard ASCE/SEI 7-16. Also included is a report, "Probabilistic Tsunami Design Maps for the ASCE 7-16 Standard," which was prepared for the Structural Engineering Institute by researchers developing the Tsunami Design Geodatabase. This report describes the development of the 2,500-year probabilistic tsunami design zone maps and is suitable as a user manual. Structural engineers, architects, and building code officials will find this collection of maps useful in identifying locations that fall within the Tsunami Design Zone as defined by ASCE/SEI 7-16.

Abstract

All in the Family: Civil Engineering Legacy Stories presents short accounts of families with multiple generations of civil engineers. Each profile describes how family members influenced each other to enter the civil engineering profession and captures the stories of how they contributed to major historical highway, bridge, and airport construction projects. Profiles are generously illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs of the civil engineers and their projects.

Abstract

Western Pennsylvania's infrastructure is renowned for traversing valleys, mountains, rivers and everything in between. Early surveying in the region delineated state and local boundaries that allowed for the mapping of canals, railroads and roadways. Engineers developed bridges, ground transportation systems and airports that linked Pittsburgh to the world. Frequently overflowing rivers transformed into reliable navigation passageways. Drinking water and wastewater treatment systems allowed development and population to flourish, leading to investments in iconic buildings. Join expert civil engineers and professionals as they narrate the story of Pittsburgh and the surrounding region's engineering triumphs.
