현재 해외 소재의 한국문화재는 20개국 582개처 167,968점으로 추산된다. 많은 국민들은 보통 이들 해외 소재 한국문화재가 모두 약탈 문화재이고, 따라서 과거사에 대한 사과를 받고 모두 환수하는 것이 옳다고 생각하곤 한다. 이는 역사적으로 많은 문화재를 약탈당한 국가의 국민으로서 자연스러운 태도일 수 있다. 그러나 해외 소재 한국문화재를 단순히 '환수'라는 틀로만 바라볼 수는 없다. 국외소재문화재재단 초대 이사장인 저자가 지난 4년간 수행해온 여러 작업을 엮어, 해외 소재 한국문화재의 실태를 바라보고 우리가 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하고 있다.

A book about Korean art history co-authored by the late Professor Kim Won-yong, who laid the groundwork for archeology and art history in Korea, and Seoul National University Professor Ahn Hwi-joon, who currently leads the field. First published in 1968 under the title of Korean Art History by Kim Won-yong, the book was enlarged in 1973, and thoroughly revised and republished in 1986 under the title of New Korean Art History, which Professor Ahn co-authored. History of Korean Art is a newly revised and enlarged edition of New Korean Art History.
