Courant de la sociologie américaine, l’ethnométhodologie tend, depuis une trentaine d’années, à redéfinir l’objet et la méthode de l’observation sociologique en rassemblant et en combinant une grande variété d’approches dans le but de parvenir à une nouvelle théorie de l’action. Les textes regroupés dans cette « ethnométhodologie de la perception » apportent la démonstration que la perception constitue un facteur à part entière de l’action et renouvellent l’approche sociologique des situations de la vie quotidienne tout à fait courantes, telles que la conduite automobile, le trafic piétonnier, la conversation.

L'ethnométhodologie est un programme de recherche qui se propose d'aborder les phénomènes sociaux différemment des approches dominantes en sciences sociales. Il s'agit pour l'essentiel de revenir au concret, d'arriver, comme le disait Marcel Mauss : "à voir les choses sociales elles-mêmes comme elles sont", c'est à dire telles qu'elles émergent et s'organisent dans l'expérience des agents sociaux, sans préjuger de leur définition. Ce parti pris s'accompagne d'une réorientation de l'analyse : l'explication théorique cède la place à la simple description. Cet ouvrage collectif s'efforce de présenter l'état actuel de la recherche en ethnométodologie, et tente d'évaluer, de façon raisonnée, l'importance de sa contribution aux sciences sociales

Based on more than thirty years of teaching ethnomethodology, Kenneth Liberman—himself a student of Garfinkel's—provides an up-to-date introduction through a series of classroom-based studies. Each chapter focuses on a routine experience in which people collaborate to make sense of and coordinate an unscripted activity: organizing the coherence of the rules of a game, describing the objective taste of a cup of gourmet coffee, making sense of intercultural conversation, reading a vague map, and finding order amidst chaotic traffic flow. Detailed descriptions of the kinds of ironies that naturally arise in these and other ordinary affairs breathe new life into phenomenological theorizing and sociological understanding.
