Nigel Shafran's new book takes five interconnected series of photographs and weaves them together with the common thread of domestic scenes. There is a constant sense of forward movement that is sometimes overt, as in the photographs of supermarket checkouts or underground escalators; sometimes implicit and more emotionally charged, as when the photographer faces the inventory of possessions in his mother's last house. But in each case these photographs deal as much with what has been left behind as with what lies ahead. They carry the inevitability of change and the psychological undertow of time passing moving forward - Provided by the publisher.

AMERICAN POLYCHRONIC presents the first comprehensive catalogue of Roe Ethridge’s work from 1999 to 2022, comprised of two interlocking threads of his celebrated photographic practice. Ethridge’s artistic and personal work is sequenced chronologically, interwoven with his commercial photography in chronological reverse, together forming a vibrant sequence of harmonies and dissonance, hits and B-sides. This long-form sequence moves fluidly between genres in the pursuit of a distinctive visual language — blending and playfully juxtaposing the realms of fine art, fashion imagery, and advertising with the everyday, personal, and generic. Ethridge explores how new visual experiences can be created through the reproduction and recombination of images, photographing and distorting the real as way of suggesting — or disrupting — the ideal.

"Offering unprecedented access to the V&A's collection of autochromes - one of the greatest collections of early colour photography in the world - 'Colour Mania' presents this pioneering photographic process in its full, vibrant, wondrous and painterly beauty and provides a breathtaking view of the early 20th century in colour. These autochromes are so fragile and light sensitive that they cannot be displayed in public - this book presents the only chance to see them.0 Invented by the Lumiere brothers - also pioneers of cinema - autochrome was the first widely available direct colour photography process and remained so for the next twenty years. Upon its commercial release in 1907, it was eagerly embraced by Pictorialist photographers and advocated by its leading member Alfred Stieglitz, who predicted 'a mania for colour'. Photographed with great care for this book, the V&A's abundant collection of autochromes is brought to the public for the very first time. Organized thematically and with sections focusing in-depth on the photographers who engaged with the process Colour Mania is built upon the latest scholarship and research by Catlin Longford and includes insights into how these extraordinary photographs are being preserved for future generations. An opportunity to travel in time and understand a tour de force in photographic technology, 'Colour Mania' will delight anyone who desires to experience the past in colour." -- publisher's description.

Sally Mann: The Flesh and The Spirit is the first in-depth exploration of this world-renowned artist's approach to the body. Throughout her career, Mann has fearlessly pushed her exploration of the human form, tackling often difficult subject matter and making unapologetically sensual images that are simultaneously bold and lyrical. This beautifully produced publication includes Mann's earliest platinum prints from the late 1970s, Polaroid still lifes, early color work of her children, haunting landscape images, recent self-portraits and nude studies of her husband. These series document Mann's interest in the body as principal subject, with the associated issues of vulnerability and mortality lending an elegiac note to her images. In bringing them together, author and curator John Ravenal examines the varied ways in which Mann's experimental approach, including ambrotypes and gelatin-silver prints made from collodian wet-plate negatives, moves her subjects from the corporeal to the ethereal. Ravenal also supplies a comprehensive introduction as well as individual entries on each series, and essays by David Levi Strauss ("Eros, Psyche, and the Mendacity of Photography") and Anne Wilkes Tucker ("Living Memory") add different, but equally illuminating perspectives to this work. Sally Mann: The Flesh and The Spirit is a must for any serious library of photographic literature, students, scholars, collectors and others interested in her work. Sally Mann (born 1951) is one of America's most renowned photographers. She has received numerous awards, including NEA, NEH, and Guggenheim Foundation grants, and her work is held by major institutions internationally. Mann's many books include What Remains (2003), Deep South (2005), and the Aperture titles At Twelve (1988), Immediate Family (1992), Still Time (1994) and Proud Flesh (2009). She lives in Lexington, Virginia.

Photographer Marcia Resnick (b. 1950) earned recognition as part of the legendary Downtown New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s. Her portraits of the era's major cultural figures, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Belushi, and Susan Sontag, have contributed to the scene's mythic status. Against this backdrop, Resnick also produced a significant body of work that engaged with the history of art, took a humorous approach to conceptual art and feminism, and proposed new ideas for what photography could be. Spanning the artist's career, this richly illustrated volume explores Resnick's early influences and education at Cooper Union and CalArts; discusses her series and photobooks such as See and Re-visions; and situates the artist's work within the history of contemporary art. An afterword by Laurie Anderson speaks to the very personal vision of Resnick's photography.

On Onions is a photographic study of onions by Israeli-born artist Elad Lassry (born 1977). Characteristically highlighting the spectrum of hues and shapes for the vegetable, Lassry's selected taxonomy includes sections on red, yellow and white onions, each of which possesses its own distinct taste and benefits. On Onions is Lassry's first artist's book, and the work will exist only in book form; it is at once wry, refreshing and disorienting in its biology workbook style, which makes fruitful use of "the confusion that results when there is something just slightly wrong in a photograph" (as the artist has described his practice in general). Composed by the artist and arranged by Stuart Bailey, the book includes an essay written by Angie Keefer about the effects of sliced onions on human tear ducts.

"Today's photography is part of our own cultural moment, but it also arises from artistic traditions of the past. Seduced by Art looks at the effects of art and its history on the creation of photographs, tracing continuities in aims, visual style, and technical experimentation. This sumptuous book shows how photographers such as Julia Margaret Cameron sought to elevate the status of their work by referencing Old Masters. Similarly, contemporary practitioners look to their photographic predecessors, as well as art history, for inspiration. Among the many photographers featured are Ori Gersht, Luc Delahaye, Thomas Struth, Tom Hunter, and Helen Chadwick, and paintings from Caravaggio, Zurbarán, Delacroix, Ingres, Constable, and others. Each chapter takes a genre--portraiture, the nude, still life, and landscape--and discusses the challenges that each poses for photographers. Interviews with Tina Barney, Rineke Dijkstra, Richard Billingham, Richard Learoyd, Sarah Jones, and Maisie Maud Broadhead focus in-depth on contemporary working practices."--Publisher's website.
