For over three decades, the capability approach proposed and developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum has had a distinct impact on development theories and approaches because it goes beyond an economic conception of development and engages with the normative aspects of development. This book explores the new frontiers of the capability approach and its links to human development in three main areas. First, it delves into the philosophical foundations of the approach, re-examining its links to concepts of common good, collective agency and epistemic diversity. Secondly, it addresses its 'operational frontier', aiming to give inclusive explanations of some of the most advanced methods available for capability researchers. Thirdly, it offers a wide range of the applications of this approach, as carried out by a mix of renowned capability scholars and researchers from different disciplines. This broad interdisciplinary range includes the areas of human and sustainable development, inequalities, labour markets, education, special needs, cities, urban planning, housing, social capital and happiness studies, among others.

Dit boek biedt studenten, professionals en onderzoekers in het sociaal domein een kennismaking met de theorie en praktijk van de capabilitybenadering. In deze wetenschappelijk onderbouwde benadering, ontwikkeld door de econoom en Nobelprijswinnaar Amartya Sen en de filosofe Martha Nussbaum, staat de bevordering van de kwaliteit van leven centraal. Uitgangspunt is de concrete leefsituatie van mensen. Het eerste deel van het boek introduceert de capabilitybenadering en vertaalt deze naar het sociale domein. Werkers in het sociale domein krijgen te maken met een zeer diverse groep aan burgers. Het gaat hierbij onder andere om sociale, culturele, religieuze, etnische en genderverschillen. Diversiteit in de samenleving biedt de (aankomende) ho-professional inzicht in de belangrijke concepten, methoden en (sociologische) theorieën voor het succesvol uitoefenen van diens beroep in de 21e eeuw in het Nederlandse taalgebied. Zo komen begrippen als inclusie en participatie aan de orde, belichten de auteurs de presentiebenadering en behandelen zij diversiteitscompetenties en diversiteitsbewuste communicatie. ?Participatie op gelijke voet? is een van de belangrijkste uitgangspunten in het VN-verdrag voor de rechten van mensen met een beperking en ook in de Wmo. De wijk vormt een belangrijke plek om deze participatie vorm te geven; steeds meer zorg- en welzijnsprofessionals werken wijkgericht. Maar welke mogelijkheden hebben mensen met een beperking om op gelijke voet mee te doen in de wijk waar ze wonen? Welke verschillen zijn er tussen wijken? Welke rol hebben informele bewonersgroepen in sociale verbinding en inclusie in hun wijk? In dit onderzoek staat sociale netwerkvorming en gemeenschapsvorming van mensen met een lichte verstandelijke beperking of psychische aandoening centraal, waarbij drie verschillende wijken in één stad (Nijmegen) met elkaar worden vergeleken.Uit het onderzoek van Annica Brummel blijkt dat verschillende sociale rollen bijdragen aan sociale netwerkvorming en gemeenschapsvorming, zoals buurman of buurvrouw, bezoeker, deelnemer of vrijwilliger bij wijkactiviteiten. De wijk is een belangrijke plek om sociale netwerken te vormen voor mensen met een beperking. Maar niet alle mensen met een beperking vervullen dergelijke sociale rollen. Soms is dat een bewuste keuze, maar vaak ook niet. Sommige bewonersgroepen sluiten mensen met een beperking uit. Maar ook eigen beeldvorming bij mensen met een beperking, of zelfstigma, kan het vervullen van deze sociale rollen in de weg staan. Het maakt bovendien uit in welke wijk iemand woont; het niveau van sociale verbinding verschilt per wijk.Sociale verbinding in de wijk gaat over het snijvlak tussen individu en de context, tussen zorg en welzijn, en tussen formele en informele netwerken. Het geeft inzicht in patronen die participatie op gelijke voet belemmeren, maar ook stimuleren.
