Abstract

This study explores the service-citizenship nexus in Nigeria, using the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme as an empirical backdrop. It attempts to understand the relationship between civic service and citizenship on the one hand, and it examines the question as to whether youth service promotes a sense of citizenship and patriotism on the other. In the relevant studies on service and sociology, the assumption that service is antecedent to, and impacts positively on citizenship, is taken for granted. However, conclusions from this study call for an urgent rethinking of this wisdom.

Abstract

Miranda Yates and James Youniss have brought together an international collection of essays that describe the state of community participation among the world's youth. Authors from around the globe use empirical data to present portraits of youth constructing their civic identities through such means as community service. Youth seek to resolve ideological tensions, such as in Northern Ireland and Palestine; to overcome corrupting political practices, such as in Italy and Taiwan; to deal with disillusionment, such as in Palestine and the emerging Eastern European nations; and to bridge barriers against youth's meaningful participation in the working of society, such as in Canada and Japan. Special conditions, such as the diminution of the welfare state, for instance, in former West Germany, and the rapid turn towards democracy in former East Germany offer insight into the process through which youth try to establish meaningful person-state relationships.

Abstract

Adults and youth who are engaged in social and ecological justice in community and educational work will find this book a critical overview of the role played by adults in the joint endeavours of adults and youth. Through various case studies, the book offers a glimpse into the work being undertaken by a wide range of international educators and community development workers where common themes emerge across the different sites. The book explores the development of, and the internal and external constraints upon, adult and youth emancipatory practices, as well as the effective adult and youth beliefs and actions that facilitate collaborative leadership in issues of social and ecological justice. The authors offer a critical examination of the degree to which youth are able to participate in decision-making processes, or to the extent to which they were given space and power to truly explore democratic and dialogic partnerships. With an emphasis on the power dynamics inherent in adult/youth relationships, and the potential of these relationships to engage in democratic transformation, the book examines the patterns, benefits and limitations of the youth-adult connections.
