Abstract

During the last decades there has been an increasing evidence of drastic changes in marine ecosystems due to human-induced impacts, especially on benthic ecosystems. The so called “animal forests” are currently showing a dramatic loss of biomass and biodiversity all over the world. These communities are dominated by sessile suspension feeder organisms (such as sponges, corals, gorgonians, bivalves, etc.) that generate three-dimensional structures, similar to the trees in the terrestrial forest. The animal forest provide several ecosystem services such as food, protection and nursery to the associated fauna, playing an important role in the local hydrodynamic and biogeochemical cycles near the sea floor and acting also as carbon sinks. The present book focus its attention on these three dimensional animal structures including, for the first time, all the different types of animal forests of the world in a single volume.

Abstract

The book is divided into two sections and represents the current trend of research in aquatic bioresource. In the section ""Biology, Ecology and Physiological Chemistry"", high-impact articles are contributed on reproduction, population genetics, evolution, biodiversity, biology and ecology of different aquatic faunas. Physiological chemistry of lipid, bioactive pharmaceuticals and chemical ecological aspects of aquatic organisms were discussed. In the section entitled ""Conservation and Sustainable Management"", authors highlighted conservation- and management-related issues of various bioresources in different regions of the earth. The book mentions the biological, ecological, physiological and genetic significance of aquatic organisms with resource potential. The authors stressed on rational utilisation and management of bioresource ensuring minimal damage of the aquatic ecosystem. This book would provide a direction towards sustainable ecological management of bioresource.

Abstract

This book presents study findings involving the Changjiang River estuary and Jiaozhou Bay, China, etc. It takes a large catchment as a combined ecosystem to study nutrients biogeochemistry and environmental aspects of the Changjiang River. Some of the findings have sparked new research directions, including systematic studies of nutrients in the Changjiang River; sources and control mechanisms of nitrogen and phosphorus in the Changjiang River and its estuary; removal and transport of nutrients in the turbidity maximum zone and upwelling area of the Changjiang estuary; long-term changes in nutrients and ecological responses in the Changjiang River estuary and Jiaozhou Bay; and a study on nutrient structure and nutrient composition of phytoplankton, which are topics at the forefront ofinternational marine The studies address different fields, such as biogeochemistry, marine chemistry, ecology, environmental science, oceanography and biology. .

Abstract

Biological research has a wide range of applications in aquatic science, which explores aquatic organisms' morphological and physiological characteristics, their behavior and interactions, and their surrounding environment. Organized into five sections and written by experts in their respective fields, Biological Research in Aquatic Sciences covers topics including cryobiology, spermatology, climate change, migration of aquatic species, and plankton in aquatic ecosystems. This book will help researchers and interested readers better understand current trends in biological research regarding aquatic science.

Abstract

The influence of Bernard Dussart's contributions to limnology in general as well as to freshwater copepodology in particular can hardly be overestimated. From 1945 until his decease late 2008, he has devoted more than 60 years of his life to studying freshwater bodies and their inhabitants. Next to his 200+ scientific papers, his frequent travels brought him all over the world, where he invariably left an inheritage of enhanced interest in problems of freshwater biology and management. The contributions in this book show the progress of research on the Copepoda found in continental waters and in part continue along the lines B. Dussart has set out: a worthy tribute to one of the very nestors of copepodology of fresh waters.
