Abstract

Ethnopedology studies the local knowledge of soil properties and management that people who live in a particular environment for some generations possess. It encompasses all empirical soil and land knowledge systems in the broader context of natural resources management. This book presents a first attempt at an international level to compile the wealth of ethnopedological information. A general preface to ethnopedology is provided by Victor M. Toledo, who approaches the discipline from a holistic, ethno-ecological perspective and calls for comparative ethno-ecological analyses to foster rigorous systematisation and conceptualisation. This short introduction concentrates on the broader discipline of ethno-ecology and the study of local environmental knowledge. Despite the promising title, this section fails to discuss how ethnopedology and ethno-ecology are linked only three paragraphs are devoted to actual ethnopedology. The authors continue to discuss ethnopedology in the broader frame of ethno-ecology and adopt a holistic approach that includes attention for the cosmos, corpus and praxis. Although more progress has been made in ethno-scientific research, the authors highlight the growing international interest in local knowledge of soils, as evidenced by the exponential growth in the number of studies documented during the past decades. The 27-page long conceptual review and general synthesis of the literature database includes illustrations and maps, and is followed by a brief technical introduction to the bibliography. Although the conceptual review is brief, the section indicates the regions, ethnic groups and topics that require further research. The core of the publication is an impressive compilation of references and abstracts. The literature on local soil knowledge is dispersed, and shows a lack of uniform methods, due to the diverse background of scientists and practitioners who independently conduct research on the topic. Compilation of the reference database must have been an arduous task. Publications on the topic tend to be difficult to locate and often remain part of the 'grey literature zone'. Since information on local soil knowledge is often reported alongside other research findings, some local-scale publications, reports and unpublished materials may not have been included in the database. The authors recognise these omissions and encourage reporting them. The bibliography lists 895 references of books and papers on the subject, most of which are complemented with keywords and a one paragraph to one page long abstract. The majority of abstracts are in English, and a few French and Spanish abstracts are also included. Some of the references date back as far as 1935 and the incorporation of abstracts ended in July 1999. The authors have made a substantial effort to make the bibliographic database as accessible as possible. The bibliography is organised geographically, by continent, region, country, state, and community and subsequently divided into ethnopedological references (48%) and references of ethnopedological interest (52%). The referenced studies feature approximately 217 ethnic groups in 61 countries of which 35% are located in Africa, 34% in America, 26% in Asia, 4% in Europe and 1% in the Pacific. The majority of studies are from three of the most fragile ecological zones in the world: the cold and dry highlands, the arid and semi-arid lowlands, and the tropical humid lowlands. The book contains cross-references to author, geographical location, agro-ecological zone, ethnic group and/or theme. There are five thematic indices: agriculture, livestock and forestry; culture and society; development and organisation; ecology and environment; review, approach and method; and soil, land and water. This book presents the first bibliography of ethnopedology and serves as an invaluable guide to consultants, planners, researchers, extension agents, policy makers, rural populations, and anyone else interested in local perspectives on land resource management and land use planning. Particularly, professionals in remote parts of the world or without access to computerised library catalogues may find it useful.
