"This book recounts the fascinating history of Titian's unfinished portrait, A Lady and her Daughter (possibly his mistress Milia and their daughter), which dates from the early 1550s. After Titian's death in 1576, it was repainted in his studio with a more saleable image of Tobias and the Angel. Often presented as Titian's work but in a style which made the attribution suspect, the painting has had a succession of owners. It belonged to Tsar Nicholas I for a short time, and ultimately to the art dealer René Gimpel, who hid it with other artwork in a warehouse in London during World War II, where it miraculously survived the Blitz. It was not until the mid-20th century that an x-ray examination uncovered the beautiful painting underneath, an undisputed work by the great master himself. The painstaking restoration process, begun in 1983, took 20 years. Notable art historians and conservators have contributed essays that offer an in-depth examination of this exceptional and mysterious painting."--Publisher's description.

"Tiziano Vecellio, known in England as Titian, is one of the undisputed masters of Western art." "Written by some of the world's most renowned Titian scholars, this beautiful and generously illustrated book accompanies the first monographic exhibition in Britain devoted to the work of this extraordinary artist. The exhibition includes over forty paintings from every stage of Titian's long career, including masterpieces such as the group of paintings commissioned for the studiolo of Alfonso d'Este, shown together for the first time since they first hung in the Duke's place in Ferrara." "The catalogue to the exhibition is preceded by four authoritative essays investigating different aspects of Titian's work: Titian's life and times, by Charles Hope; his skill as a painter of portraits, by Jennifer Fletcher; his painting technique, by Jill Dunkerton; and an examination of Titian replicas and variants, by Miguel Falomir. These provide the background for a detailed discussion of the works in the exhibition. Short essays by David Jaffe introduce the main themes. The wide scope of the book and its lavish illustrations make this the most informative and accessible introduction to Titian for many years."--Jacket.

"Titian (c. 1488-1576) produced a masterful group of paintings for Philip II of Spain, celebrating the loves of gods, goddesses, and mortals. Depicting scenes from the Ovid's narrative poem Metamorphoses, Titian named them "poesie" and considered the works as visual equivalents of poetry. This volume presents a detailed study of the complete series-Danae, Venus and Adonis, Perseus and Andromeda, Diana and Actaeon, Diana and Callisto, and The Rape of Europa, as well as The Death of Actaeon-lavishly illustrated with details of these emotionally charged paintings. The book explores Titian's creative process, studio practice, and technique, in addition to his use of literary and visual sources and his correspondence with Philip II. The artistic legacy of the series for later European painting is also examined in the works in artists such as Rubens, Velázquez, and Rembrandt. Offering the most comprehensive overview of these remarkable works, Titian: Love, Desire, Death is an indispensable resource for scholars and admirers of Renaissance painting"--
