Summary: Chassé d'Afrique par les invasions vandales et installé à Constantinople au début du 6e s., Priscien a engagé à la fin de l'Antiquité une synthèse et une refonte de la grammaire antique en faisant confluer ses principaux courants, la tradition grammaticale romaine et les apports grecs issus de la grammaire alexandrine, auxquels il a intégré des recherches menées dans d'autres domaines de l'analyse de la parole, en rhétorique et en philosophie. Cet effort d'innovation mené dans la partie orientale de l'Empire romain répondait au recul de la langue latine et de son enseignement face au grec, et se présente comme une solution pour enrayer ce recul. La création de la première grammaire moderne en Occident est ainsi d'abord une entreprise de relégitimation de l'apprentissage et de la maîtrise des codes d'analyse de la langue, pratique culturelle largement développée par l'Antiquité. Le présent volume est la première mise au point d'ensemble qui lui soit consacrée, réunissant les points de vue transversaux d'antiquisants, de linguistes, d'historiens et médiévistes.

This book examines the various philosophical influences contained in the ancient description of the noun. According to the traditional view, grammar adopted its philosophical categories in the second century B.C. and continued to make use of precisely the same concepts for over six hundred years, that is, until the time of Priscian (ca. 500).
