"Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in our understanding of planetary systems. Initially, new exoplanets were discovered through the effects they have on their parent stars -- whether through radial velocity, transits or microlensing methods -- but now the technology and the techniques have been developed to image light from exoplanets directly. Vast improvements have also been made in our ability to resolve circumstellar matter from protoplanetary disks, through transition disks to debris disks. These dramatic new observations have led to new advances in our theoretical understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 299 report on recent results of this field covering the range from the detailed imaging of protoplanetary disks to the modeling of planetary atmospheres. The volume benefits both active researchers and graduate students entering this dynamic and rapidly progressing field."--

The topics of climate change, weather prediction, atmospheric sciences and other related fields are gaining increased attention due to the possible impacts of changes in climate and weather upon the planet. Concurrently, the increasing ability to computationally model the governing partial differential equations that describe these various topics of climate has gained a great deal of attention as well. In the current book, several aspects of these topics are examined to provide another stepping stone in recent advances in the fields of study and also focal points of endeavor in the evolving technology.

Knowledge has no limits and everyone has the opportunity to gain it and expand the view and horizon of understanding. Nothing in this world remains permanent, everything changes. Hence the field of morphology of the Earth (geomorphology) provides a basis for exploring, understanding and comprehending the forms and processes that occur in our surrounding. This book presents some of the ideas and understanding about geomorphology:
Learn about the effect of deforestation and then reforestation on river channel morphology.
Understand the composite mathematical modelling for continuous simulations of hydro-geomorphological processes.
Know about the process-response models for estimation of cliff erosion and its quantitative predictions.
Grow your knowledge about various geomorphometric tools that are available in freely available GIS software.

This book is devoted to the dynamics of arc migration and amalgamation on active plate margins, and we focus on the architectural examples from the NW Pacific margin. Multidisciplinary approach pursuing the complicated tectonic processes is based on stratigraphy, sedimentology, geochemistry, and geophysics. The first chapter is dedicated to the genetic analysis of sedimentary basins in and around arc-trench systems. The following block of chapters deals with the petrological, geochemical, and rock magnetic properties of arc constituents, which inform us of the migration history of crustal blocks on oceanic plates, and spatiotemporal fluctuation in modes of subduction and stress regimes upon the Eurasian convergent margins. Our vision is finally presented as a reconstruction model of plate motion around the study area since the Cretaceous (100 Ma). Diverse contents of this book surely provide the audience with the present accomplishments of tectonic researches for active margins by Earth scientists.

This book contains 12 chapters dealing with the studies on volcanoes, their geological and geophysical setting, the theoretical aspects and the numerical modeling on volcanoes, the applications of volcanoes to the industry, and the impact of volcanoes on the human health, in different geological settings and using several techniques and methods, including the volcanology, the seismology, the statistical methods to assess the correlation between seismic and volcanic activity (modified Ripley's K-function to regional seismicity), the field geological survey of volcanic successions, the analytical methods of petrologic analysis, the petrography of the volcanic rocks with the individuation of the modal compositions of volcanic rocks and their comparison with major elements and trace elements in variation diagrams, and the argon isotopic measurements performed through the peak height comparison (unspiked) method. The oceanographic methods have also been applied to case studies of submarine volcanic edifices located in the Canary Islands (Atlantic Ocean), including the sampling of the water column with a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensor rosette with 24 Niskin bottles, in order to determinate key physical and chemical parameters, such as the total-scale pH, the total dissolved inorganic carbon (C), the total alkalinity (A), the temperature, the salinity, and the dissolved oxygen. Problems of volcanic risk mitigation have also been treated, regarding the eruption disasters in Indonesia, a country where a high number of people live next to the volcanoes, and characterized by the lack of public awareness of the eruption disasters. Petrographic methods have been successfully applied to the study of the Cretaceous magmatism of the layered gabbroids of the Chukotka region (Pekulney Ridge, Russia), and geodynamic implications have been successfully established through geological and petrographic studies. The relationships among the mantle wedge, the convective heat and mass transfer, the infiltration metasomatism, the zoning, and the mathematical models have been applied to the comprehension of complex volcanic areas through the theoretical aspects of volcanic studies on magmatic chambers coupled with numerical modeling, including finite element models (FEMs) in the individuation of volcanic deformations.

This thought-provoking book looks at the nature of red dwarf systems as potential homes for life. Realistically, what are the prospects for life on these distant worlds? Could life evolve and survive there? How do these planetary surfaces and geologies evolve? How would life on a planet orbiting a red dwarf differ from life on Earth? And what are the implications for finding further habitable worlds in our galaxy? The author provides readers with insight into the habitability of planets and how this changes as time progresses and the central star evolves. Since the previous 2013 edition Under a Crimson Sun, there has been a rise in newly discovered planets orbiting red dwarfs, accompanied by controversial areas of research that test what we think we know about these systems. This revised edition delves into the wealth of new material uncovered since that date. It explains the often conflicting results and analyses put forward and clarifies our understanding of these exciting new worlds. The chapters explore the full width of relevant scientific discovery and speculation on the potential for red dwarf planets to host life. New content includes improved atmospheric models, new understandings of the impact of stellar radiation on the atmosphere of red dwarf worlds, tidal-locking, and comparisons with terrestrial geology and climate.

This book investigates the mineralogy and shock effects of Yanzhuang chondrite, using modern micro-mineralogical experimental techniques, including SEM, TEM, EPMA, Raman microprobe spectroscopy, instrumental neutron activation analysis, X-ray micro-diffraction analysis, micro-PIXE analysis and laser ablation ICP-MS. The micro-structural and micro-morphological characteristics as well as chemical composition of minerals were studied in details. Based on the studies in the shock effects of rocks and minerals, and the detailed study in the shock-produced melt, the book concludes that Yanzhuang chondrite is the most heavily shocked ordinary H group chondrite ever found and that it contains the most abundant shock induced melt among all known shock-melt-bearing chondritic meteorites.
