Abstract

th This book contains the best papers of the 5 International Conference on e-Business and Telecommunications (ICETE), which was held in July 2008, in Porto, Portugal. This conference reflects a continuing effort to increase the dissemination of recent research results among professionals who work in the areas of e-business and tele- communications. ICETE is a joint international conference integrating four major areas of knowledge that are divided into four corresponding conferences: ICE-B (International Conf. on e-Business), SECRYPT (International Conf. on Security and Cryptography), SIGMAP (Int’l Conf. on Signal Processing and Multimedia) and WINSYS (International Conf. on Wireless Information Systems). The program of this joint conference included several outstanding keynote lectures presented by internationally renowned distinguished researchers who are experts in the various ICETE areas. Their keynote speeches have contributed to heightening the overall quality of the program and significance of the theme of the conference. The conference topic areas define a broad spectrum in the key areas of e-business and telecommunications. This wide-view reporting made ICETE appealing to a global audience of engineers, scientists, business practitioners and policy experts. The papers accepted and presented at the conference demonstrated a number of new and innovative solutions for e-business and telecommunication networks and systems, showing that the technical problems in these closely related fields are challenging and worthwhile approaching an interdisciplinary perspective such as that promoted by ICETE.

Abstract

The First International ICST Conference on Mobile Networks and Management (MONAMI) was held in Athens, Greece during October 13–14, 2009, hosted by the National Technical University of Athens. Through what we hope will be a long-lasting series of events, this new international conference aims at bringing together top - searchers, academics, and practitioners specializing in the area of mobile network management. Multiaccess and resource management, mobility management, and n- work management have emerged as core topics in the design, deployment, and ope- tion of current and future networks. Yet, they are treated as separate, isolated domains with very little interaction between the experts in these fields and lack cro- pollination. MONAMI 2009 offered the opportunity to leading researchers, industry professionals, and academics to meet and discuss the latest advances in these areas and present results related to technologies for true plug-and-play networking, efficient use of all infrastructure investments, and access competition. MONAMI 2009 featured eight full papers and five short papers, which were - lected after a thorough peer-review process based on their relevance to the scope of the conference and their technical merit. The overall acceptance rate was 50%. The contributing authors covered a range of topics in mobile networks and their mana- ment that are currently of high interest in the wireless research area.

Abstract

The first edition of a conference is a significant organizational and scientific gamble. In some cases, these challenges are rewarded by results well above the initial expec- tions. AFRICOMM 2009, the First International ICST Conference on e-Infrastructure and e-Services for Developing Countries, was clearly one of such cases. The conference aimed at bringing together international researchers, public of- cers, policy makers and practitioners in ICT to discuss issues and trends, recent research, innovation advances, and on-the-field experiences related to e-Government, e-Governance, e-Infrastructure, and e-Business, with a focus on developing countries. It is in fact widely accepted that ICT Infrastructure and (e-*)services are key drivers for development, well-being, and improved quality of life. This was also highlighted by Kofi Annan, former UN General Secretary, in 2002: “While ICT cannot address all of [Africa's] problems, they can do much to place Africa on a firmer industrial footing. . . and strengthen the continent's human resources, with training that leads to sustainable livelihoods. ” AFRICOMM 2009 was organized in three tracks: two of them organized as Research Tracks, on Information and Communication Infrastructures and on e- Services for Developing Countries, and one Policy and Governance Track. Contri- tions to the first two tracks were selected by peer-review, while the policies session involved key stakeholders in the areas of ICT, development, and policy making who submitted position papers. Participation and selection of papers for the tracks was quite good.

Abstract

As computational science and engineering (CSE) become specialized and fragmented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics in CSE have common threads and because of this, advances in one sub-discipline may transmit to another. The presentation of - sults between different sub-disciplines of CSE encourages this interchange for the advancement of CSE as a whole. Of particular interest is the hybrid approach of combining ideas from one discipline with those of another to achieve a result that is more significant than the sum of the individual parts. Through this hybrid philosophy, a new or common principle can be discovered which has the propensity to propagate throughout this multifaceted discipline. This volume comprises the selection of extended versions of papers that were presented in their shortened form at the 2008 International Conference on Future Generation Communication and Networking (http://www.sersc.org/FGCN2008/) and 2009 Advanced Science and Technology (http://www.sersc.org/AST2009/). We would like to acknowledge the great effort of all in the FGCN2008 and AST 2009 International Advisory Board and members of the International Program Committee, as well as all the organizations and individuals who supported the idea of publishing these advances in communication and networking, including SERSC (http://www.sersc.org/) and Springer. We would like to give special thanks to Rosslin John Robles, Maricel O. Balitanas, Farkhod Alisherov Alisherovish, Feruza Sattarova Yusfovna. These graduate school students of Hannam University attended to the editing process of this volume with great passion.

Abstract

TheInternationalConferenceonWired/WirelessInternetCommunications(WWIC)was held for the second time, following a successful start in 2002, in LasVegas. The goal of theconferencewastopresenthigh-qualityresultsinthe?eld,andtoprovideaframework for research collaboration through focused discussions that designated future research efforts and directions. The number and the quality of submissions indicate that we are well on the way to establishing WWIC as a major event in the ?eld of wired/wireless internet communications. We received around 60 competitive submissions from Europe, North America, the Middle East and the Far East. Each submission was reviewed by at least two experts, although the majority received three or more reviews. Based on this rigorous reviewing procedure, the International Program Committee selected 26 submissions for presen- tion and publication in the proceedings. Therefore, we should all expect the quality of a selective conference in this volume. We hope you will enjoy it. The papers selected for presentation at WWIC 2004 were stimulating and of utmost interest. They were organized into eight sessions: 1. Protocol engineering and energy ef?ciency in wireless networks 2. Mobility management and mobile devices 3. Transport layer and congestion control 4. Architecture, implementation and experimentation 5. Network and protocol modeling 6. Wireless network scheduling and analysis 7. Multimedia distribution and group communication 8. Service discovery. We would like to thank the authors for choosingWWIC 2004 to submit their results. We would also like to thank all the members of the Technical Program Committee, as well as the additional reviewers, for their effort to provide detailed and constructive reviews.

Abstract

The rapid developments in mobile and wireless communication technologies and the continuing miniaturization of computing devices makes ubiquitous information environments more of a technical reality than a distant vision. Ubiquituous computing as the next wave of organizational computing offers new possibilities and opportunities for organizations to improve their productivity and effectiveness. However, the emergence of ubiquitous information environments not only signals opportunities, but also fundamentally challenges many of the traditional assumptions about organizations, management, computing, communication and work. The ubiquitous information environments affect all levels of organization activities. Currently there are a number of activities in designing and implementing ubiquitous information environments. The 7 parts of this book, and the 31 chapters, cover various issues related to the design and implementation of ubiquitous information environments. The book covers old and familiar issues in light of emerging ubiquitous information environments as well as novel social and technical problems. The book brings in diverse perspectives on ubiquitous information environments, from computer-supported collaborative work, institutional perspective, diffusion of innovation, management, sociology, individual cognition, and software engineering. It also covers a variety of technologies that make up ubiquitous information environments including RFID, wireless grid, GPS, mobile phones, and wireless local area network. The papers cover many contexts of ubiquitous computing including personal use, library, automobile, healthcare, police, professional knowledge work, remote diagnostics of machines, and marketing, attesting to the wide range of potential of ubiquitous information environments. This book developed as a collective product of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 8.2, a working group dedicated to the study of the interaction of information systems and the organization.
