Abstract

"On 29 December, 1170, Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, was brutally murdered in his own cathedral. News of the event was rapidly disseminated throughout Europe, generating a widespread cult which endured until the reign of Henry VIII in the sixteenth century, and engendering a fascination which has lasted until the present day. The Cult of Thomas Becket: History and Historiography through Eight Centuries contributes to the lengthy debate surrounding the saint by providing a historiographical analysis of the major themes in Becket scholarship, tracing the development of Becket studies from the writings of the twelfth-century biographers to those of scholars of the twenty-first century. The book offers a thorough commentary and analysis which demonstrates how the Canterbury martyr was viewed by writers of previous generations as well as our own, showing how they were influenced by the intellectual trends and political concerns of their eras, and indicating how perceptions of Thomas Becket have changed over time. In addition, several chapters are devoted a discussion of artworks in various media devoted to the saint, as well as liturgies and sermons composed in his honor. Combining a wide historical scope with detailed textual analysis, this book will be of great interest to scholars of medieval religious history, art history, liturgy, sanctity and hagiography."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Abstract

This is the first new English translation of the verse 'Life of Thomas Becket' by Guernes de Pont-Sainte-Maxence in almost forty years, and both the translation and the introductory materials take full advantage of the many significant changes in scholarship since that time. Guernes' work is itself an essential witness to the cultural, intellectual, and political upheavals in England during the twelfth century: the emergence of a vibrant new francophone literary culture; the rising importance of written documents and bureaucracy; and the long-rumbling contest between papal and royal authority that ultimately brought about the profound shock of Becket's murder in Canterbury Cathedral. Ian Short's translation, assured in the balance it strikes between readability and fidelity to the tone and context of the original, is a companion to Jacques Thomas's recent edition of the Medieval French text, and is accompanied by explanatory notes that will make this the go-to English version for undergraduate and graduate students interested in the literature, religion, and history of the middle ages.

Abstract

"This Companion offers a comprehensive introduction to the life and work of a major figure of the modern world. Combining breadth of coverage with depth, the book opens with essays on More's family, early life and education, his literary humanism, virtuoso rhetoric, illustrious public career and ferocious opposition to emergent Protestantism, and his fall from power, incarceration, trial and execution. These chapters are followed by in-depth studies of five of More's major works - Utopia, The History of King Richard the Third, A Dialogue Concerning Heresies, A Dialogue of Comfort against Tribulation and De Tristitia Christi - and a final essay on the varied responses to the man and his writings in his own and subsequent centuries. The volume provides an accessible overview of this fascinating figure to students and other interested readers, whilst also presenting, and in many areas extending, the most important modern scholarship on him"-- Provided by publisher.
