Abstract

Reflections on boys and education have become rare in the academic field after intense debates in the 2000s and early 2010s. Even though there is a persistently active field of pedagogical practice that addresses boys and their life situations in a gender-reflective way, results of empirical research and theoretical reflections are published only sporadically. There is a need for updating the knowledge about boys and education. Primarily, this knowledge captures the workings of ideas and norms of masculinity that are oriented toward dominance. This volume sheds light on the practical parallelism of different conceptions of masculinity in educational practice, thus contributing to a differentiation of theoretical perspectives. Based on empirical studies, the contributions address the topic in relation to early childhood and school pedagogy, vocational education, open youth work, and vocational training biographies.

Abstract

" ... a comprehensive and contemporary reader for the growing field of men's and masculinities studies. It takes a conceptual approach by covering the wide range of scholarship being done on masculinities beyond the model of hegemonic masculinity. C.J. Pascoe and Tristan Bridges extend the boundaries of the field and provide a new framework for understanding masculinities studies. Rather than taking a topics-based approach to masculinity, Exploring Masculinities offers an innovative conceptual approach that enables students to study a given phenomenon from a variety of perspectives. It divides up the field in ways that provide accessible introductions to complex debates and key intra- and interdisciplinary distinctions. The book provides a portable set of conceptual tools on which scholars and students can rely to analyze masculinities in different contexts, time periods, and embodiments."--Back cover.

Abstract

This book fundamentally revises our notion of why soldiers of the eighteenth century enlisted, served and fought. In contrast to traditional views of the brutal conditions supposedly prevailing in old-regime armies, Ilya Berkovich reveals that soldiers did not regard military discipline as illegitimate or unnecessarily cruel, nor did they perceive themselves as submissive military automatons. Instead he shows how these men embraced a unique corporate identity based on military professionalism, forceful masculinity and hostility toward civilians. These values fostered the notion of individual and collective soldierly honour which helped to create the bonding effect which contributed toward greater combat cohesion. Utilising research on military psychology and combat theory, and employing the letters, diaries and memoirs of around 250 private soldiers and non-commissioned officers from over a dozen different European armies, Motivation in War transforms our understanding of life of the common soldier in early modern Europe.

Abstract

"Was a medieval priest viewed as masculine by his parishioners? Did a monk consider himself fully male? How did a bishop assert his masculinity in conflicts with secular authorities? These are some of the questions posed by Negotiating clerical identities. In this volume, Jennifer Thibodeaux has assembled the most cutting-edge research today on medieval clerics and masculine performances. Spanning a wide range of geographical contexts and time periods, the essays in this volume illuminate the ways in which medieval clerics performed masculinity and negotiated their gender identities, both with lay society and within the various orders of the medieval church."--Cover, p. Abstract

"In the first comprehensive study of plays written for male characters only, Robert Vorlicky offers a new theory that links cultural codes governing gender and the conventions determining dramatic form. Act Like a Man looks at a range of plays, including those by O'Neill, Albee, Mamet, Baraka, and Rabe as well as new works by Philip Kan Gotanda, Alonzo Lamont, and Robin Swados, to examine how dialogue within these works reflects the social codes of male behavior and inhibits individualization among men. Plays in which women are absent are often characterized by the location of a male "other"--A female presence who distances himself from the dominant, impersonal masculine ethos and thereby becomes a facilitator of personal communication. The potential authority of this figure is so powerful that its presence becomes the primary determinant of the quality of men's interaction and of the range of male subjectivities possible. This formulation becomes the basis of an alternative theory of American dramatic construction, one that challenges traditional dramaturgical notions of realism"--Publisher's description

Abstract

In Keeping autonomous driving alive, Göde Both studies the relationships between researchers and artefacts held together by contested visions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a pioneering research project in Germany, he argues we can make sense of technological visions only if we simultaneously grasp the role of care, gender, and narrative in sustaining technological
