This book provides up-to-date information on key topics and issues in Pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), including the epidemiology, biology, diagnosis and treatment of particular forms of the disease, supportive care, and survivorship. The entire spectrum of clinical management on pediatric AML is covered with the aim of equipping readers with the latest knowledge relevant to clinical practice and research, based on enormous efforts made by cooperative clinical trial groups and consortia worldwide. Each chapter is written by internationally renowned authorities who have been selected for their expertise in the subjects discussed. This book will serve pediatric hematologists/oncologists, fellows, and residents both as a comprehensive source of information and as a quick reference. The book will also be of interest to pediatricians and general practitioners.

Acute Myelogenous Leukemia is a timely compilation of new concepts in the molecular pathogenesis and molecular therapy of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). The focus is on selected critical molecular determinants of AML pathogenesis and pathophysiology and the exploitation of these factors by diverse therapeutic agents and modalities. Bringing together new concepts and findings in the basic and clinical science of AML, the book emphasizes the molecular basis for new therapies that stand to have the greatest potential impact on the clinical face of these diseases. The text provides insights into selected novel strategies currently and prospectively being developed, including interruption of specific signal transduction pathways, modulation of gene expression, attempts to reinstate differentiation, and immunomodulation. There is an emphasis throughout on the bidirectional flow of knowledge between the clinical and laboratory arenas, and both basic and clinical scientists will benefit from this translational text.

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), is the most common form of leukemia in adults. AML is a deadly form of malignancy, the prognosis for which has not improved in the last two decades. More importantly, it is a malignancy that is seen in older adults, therefore the number of cases is likely to rise as the population ages. Over the past 15 years, genetic mechanisms underlying AML have begun to unfold. Additional research in this area has helped identify key components and characteristics. Consequently, targeted therapy of AML is receiving much attention. It is the hope of researchers that as with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and the drug, Gleevec, a targeted therapy for AML will be discovered. "The effective treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia remains a great challenge. This text reviews our understanding of the molecular and biologic basis of the disease. Leading investigators address advances in prognostication and therapeutic strategies that have significant promise." Steven T. Rosen, M.D. Series Editor.
