Učebnice představuje genetiku populací v tradičním, dnes už klasickém kontextu s obohacením o nově využívané prvky moderní molekulární biologie. Je určena vysokoškolským studentům biologických oborů a obecně všem zájemcům o problematiku genetiky populací, kteří mají základní znalosti z obecné a molekulární genetiky. Svým pojetím je základem k pochopení evoluční genetiky. Vlastní koncepce učebnice vychází z dlouholetých zkušeností autorky s výukou předmětu Genetika populací pro studenty biologických oborů na Přírodovědecké fakultě MU. Učebnice je zaměřena tak, aby se při objasňování logiky základních principů používal jen minimální matematický aparát. V textu je uvedeno nezbytné odvození základních postupů a vzorců pro odhady genetické variability v populacích a pro odhady vlivů jednotlivých faktorů na genetickou strukturu populací. Za každou kapitolou jsou uvedeny příklady praktického využití teoretických závěrů, jejichž pochopení je možné ověřit si i na četných příkladech s řešením.
