"Jack Olsen's blunt depiction of the shameful treatment of black athletes in the 1960s. A view of the sport most Americans refused to see during a time of complacency and pervasive racial crisis in America. Black collegiate athletes were often dehumanized, exploited, and discarded. Recruited for their skill then lionized on the field and ostracized on campus. The world of professional sports offered black athletes opportunity but not equality. Positions that carry authority and responsibility were typically labeled 'white only.' Olsen interviewed sociologists, black community leaders, coaches, ADs, and numerous athletes. This ground-breaking and controversial report sparked nationwide reforms when it was covered in a five-part series published by Sports Illustrated in 1968"--Back cover

In examining race in sport, this book is an essential contribution to debates about sports policy, the role of sport in society, and the globalisation/localisation of sports policies. In particular, it maps out local, national and international responses within sport to racism, and initiatives within sport to tackle racism in and through sport. The unifying concept through the chapters is a political and intellectual commitment to a critically realist position on racism.

"In this book, Walzak, Collura and Vidotto bring together an invited collection of writing from emerging scholars about sport, sport media and equity. Authors span from undergraduates and Masters students to doctoral candidates. All are passionate and excited about the possibilities for equity and radical change that needs to happen across the sport and sport media landscape to make sports truly equitable. This collection reflects the authors' investments and interest in sports. Each author investigates and reflects on a key social justice issue related to sport and sport media. The authors turn to social media, traditional broadcast, and personal experiences to explore their areas of interest. The content in this book ranges from exploring and analyzing an individual athlete to Muslim Sportswomen, leagues and teams, to autobiographical narratives. This critical social justice scholarship in sport and sport media offers a critique by young academics who are interested in pushing the status quo and shaking up the historical, social-cultural, and political foundations of sports locally, nationally, and globally"--

"The institutional relationship between sport and the military appears to be intensifying. In the US for example, which faced global criticism for its foreign policy during the "war on terror," militaristic images are commonplace at sporting events. The growing global phenomenon of conflating sport with war calls for closer analysis. This critical, interdisciplinary and international book seeks to identify intersections of sport and militarism as a means to interrogate, interrupt and intervene on behalf of democratic, peaceful politics. Viewing sport as a crucial site in which militarism is made visible and legitimate, the book explores the connections between sport, the military and the state, and their consequent impact on wider culture. Featuring case studies on sports such as association football, baseball and athletics from countries including the US, UK, Germany, Canada, South Africa, Brazil and Japan, each chapter sheds new light on the shifting significance of sport in our society. This book is fascinating reading for all those interested in sport and politics, the sociology of sport, communication studies, the ethics and philosophy of sport, or military sociology." --
