This book critically engages with dominant ideas of cultural homogeneity in the Nordic countries and contests the notion of homogeneity as a crucial determinant of social cohesion and societal security. Showing how national identities in the Nordic region have developed historically around notions of cultural and racial homogeneity, it exposes the varied histories of migration and the longstanding presence of ethnic minorities and indigenous people in the region that are ignored in dominant narratives. With attention to the implications of notions of homogeneity for the everyday lives of migrants and racialised minorities in the region, as well as the increasing securitisation of those perceived not to be part of the homogenous nation, this volume provides detailed analyses of how welfare state policies, media, and authorities seek to manage and govern cultural, religious, and racial differences. With studies of national minorities, indigenous people and migrants in the analysis of homogeneity and difference, it sheds light on the agency of minorities and the intertwining of securitisation policies with notions of culture, race, and religion in the government of difference. As such it will appeal to scholars and students in social sciences and humanities with interests in race and ethnicity, migration, postcolonialism, Nordic studies, multiculturalism, citizenship, and belonging.

"This edited volume uses an interdisciplinary approach to art and design that not only reframes but also repositions agendas and actions to address fragmented global systems. Contributors explore the pluriverse of art and design through epistemological and methodological considerations. Pendant toute la guerre froide, la question nationale, qui avait si fortement marqué l'entre-deux-guerres, était parvenue à se faire oublier. Sans doute, le nationalisme n'avait pas disparu de l'horizon politique, en particulier dans le Tiers Monde. Pourtant, la rhétorique dominante insistait sur l'inéluctable dépassement du nationalisme par les universalismes, celui de la démocratie libérale à l'Ouest, celui de l'idéal communiste à l'Est. Avec la chute du mur de Berlin, la scène changeait : désormais, le nationalisme était de retour. Avions-nous les outils intellectuels pour comprendre ce phénomène ? En partie oui car la sociologie anglo-américaine n'avait jamais cessé de s'intéresser au sujet. En France, il faudra attendre la décennie quatre-vingt, dans la foulée du débat sur l'immigration et la réforme du code de la nationalité, pour assister à un regain d'intérêt progressif pour la problématique de la nation. Aux perspectives novatrices surgies dans les années 1990, le présent ouvrage donne toute sa place. Il rassemble des auteurs européens et nord-américains, venant de trois disciplines (théorie politique, science politique, droit), qui ont pour point commun d'avoir participé - pour certains d'entre eux de façon décisive - au renouvellement du débat sur la nation et la diversité culturelle.
