When Laparoscopy in Children was first published in 2003, it quickly became popular with pediatric surgeons worldwide owing to its clear schematic drawings and concise text. This new edition has been revised and enlarged to cover the new procedures and other advances that have emerged in the intervening period, during which the number of operations has almost doubled. Now, the vast majority of indications for laparoscopy in children are presented and discussed. Each operation is systematically described and illustrated step by step, providing the reader with the technical guidelines required to perform laparoscopy safely even in small children. Laparoscopy in Children will be an invaluable guide for all surgeons who perform, or plan to perform, such operations.

This concise textbook of pediatric surgery is designed to guide the reader logically from symptoms and signs to diagnosis and treatment. Each chapter is devoted to one of 35 key symptoms and signs, which are organized according to six body regions: head, neck, chest, abdomen, urogenital system, and back. In each case, a brief assessment of the presenting sign/symptom and differential diagnosis is followed by discussion of occurrence, clinical presentation and significance, diagnostic work-up, treatment, and prognosis. Informative tables, illustrations, and up-to-date references are included throughout. Readers will also have access to an e-learning tool developed in collaboration with the Institute of Medical Education, University of Bern, which highlights the characteristics of pediatric surgical disorders and their treatment and includes clinical, radiological, and intraoperative images. Every physician and surgeon, whether specialist or generalist, who cares for children will find this book to be an invaluable source of information. It is based on the extensive personal experience of the author, which includes teaching at all levels and training of pediatric surgeons.

Since the breakthrough of endoscopic surgical procedures into the medical repertoire at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s, there has been an enormous evolution in endoscopic surgery, not only in general surgery, but also in pediatric surgery. Endoscopic Surgery in Infants and Children is written by an international selection of pediatric surgeons, who have contributed to the development of endoscopic surgery in children. This book represents the state of the art of endoscopic surgical techniques, which are thoroughly described and well illustrated with drawings and photographs. The fields of thoracoscopic surgery, laparoscopic transperitoneal, retroperitoneal surgery and endoscopic surgical urology are covered.

The past two decades have witnessed a technological revolution in surgery, leading to the widespread application of minimally invasive techniques. Such techniques have had a profound impact on the diagnosis and therapy of thoracic disorders, including in the pediatric age group. This book is intended as a practical guide to the current approaches in pediatric thoracic surgery. Up-to-date information is provided on the surgical techniques employed for diagnosis and therapy in a wide range of congenital and acquired thoracic pathologies from the prenatal age to adolescence. Among the disorders considered in detail are cystic malformations of the lung, chest wall deformities, diaphragmatic hernias, esophageal anomalies, mediastinal tumors, laryngeal anomalies, and thoracic infections. The authors are distinguished experts in the field from across the world. Pediatric Thoracic Surgery will be of value not only for pediatric thoracic surgeons but also for adult thoracic surgeons, pediatric anesthetists, and pediatric respiratory physicians.

Pediatric Thoracic Surgery provides comprehensive coverage of the newer developments and the most up-to-date information on many areas showing that morbidity in thoracic surgery has been immensely reduced as a result of new minor technical changes, significantly improving outcome. Recently, innovative flaps for broncho-pleural fistulas in children have helped to reduce morbidity, more aggressive surgery for thoracic malignancies in children have helped to improve their outcome and some of the newer materials and technological advances have changed overall outlook for thoracic wall tumours. Similarly, the outcome of pediatric thoracic trauma and some of the rare conditions have improved because of better understanding and operative interventions. Delayed intervention by preoperative stabilisation is an example of better understanding of the pathological process. Pediatric Thoracic Surgery, with contributions from experts worldwide, covers the field (non-cardiac) in significant depth and is a useful reference work for pediatric and thoracic surgeons. It is also a valuable guide for both adult and pediatric surgeons managing pediatric thoracic surgery on occasional basis or only during acute emergency. Pediatric respiratory physicians, anesthetists and fetal medicine doctors will also find this work of interest.

Pediatric Surgery Digest offers a praxis-oriented and up-to-date overview of all subjects in pediatric surgery according to the European surgical curriculum. Additionally, interdisciplinary aspects concerning pediatrics, adult surgery, obstetrics and other disciplines working with children were considered. The tables enable quick access to indications for the operative and conservative therapy with schematic step-by-step illustrations for nearly all surgical procedures. Practical information on child-adapted dosage for pharmacotherapy as well as age-specific injury patterns from scalding in young children to spleen rupture in teenaged vehicle users are taken into consideration. The surgical role in modern pediatric oncology is also presented according to the guidelines of SIOP. European pediatric surgeons, experts in their field, have written this book for students and trainees, but also for anybody who treats children surgically.

Nursing Care of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Patient is a detailed reference for nurses and other health care providers who care for children with neurosurgical problems. The explanations of pathophysiology, anatomy, radiodiagnostic testing, and treatment options for each neurosurgical diagnosis will help to clarify the rationale behind the nursing care. Descriptions of presenting symptoms, history and findings on neurological examination will help nurses understand the neurological disorder and identify problems. Each chapter includes case studies, impact on families, patient and family education, and practice pearls. Staff and student nurses working in clinics, critical care units, pediatric units, operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units, emergency departments, and radiology departments will benefit from the information presented. Although this book is written for nurses, medical students and neurosurgery residents will also find it helpful.

This book demonstrates clearly how to perform a clinical examination in the infant or child who has a surgical condition. Most textbooks of pediatric surgery focus on the pathological classification and overall management of disease, rather than the practical details of how a diagnosis is made. Yet, in clinical practice, experienced physicians and surgeons usually use a problem-oriented approach to clinical diagnosis. Surprisingly, this is rarely taught to students. The authors attempt to redress this imbalance by providing a clinical approach to the patient which can be learned with a minimum of factual information. The book should therefore remain useful to the practitioner throughout his or her medical career. It includes detailed coverage of the usual presentations of common diseases, but does not attempt to cover all aspects of the presentations of uncommon diseases unless their recognition is important for the well-being or survival of the child. Generally illustrated, this is a book for all who are learning the art of pediatric surgical diagnosis.
