Midwives work at the very heart of our society, sharing in women's lives at a crucial and sensitive stage. Midwives need to recognise the issue of domestic violence as well as understand the many complex causes. Can midwives do anything to help a woman who has been, or is currently, in a violent relationship? If they can, should they? This book aims to answer these questions. Pregnant women: violent men is written by an experienced midwifery educator and health professional, and by a social scientist and Open University Lecturer who has considerable experience in supporting women who survive violence. Case studies and scenarios illustrate how to apply theory to clinical midwifery practice, taking into account contemporary society, exploring the causes of violence and focusing on violence in pregnancy and childbirth. This book: Explores the shape of society and examines the roots of violence. Sensitively considers the role of the midwife when faced with domestic violence among childbearing women. Offers sound advice and ideas on how the midwife can support, influence and stand alongside women as they experience both childbirth and the crime of domestic violence. Discusses who else can help, including the law and the Women'sAid network. Pregnant women: violent men is an essential purchase for everymidwife and health care professional involved in offering childbearing women care and support.

In 1995, Kentucky governor Brereton Jones granted parole to ten women who had been convicted of killing, conspiring to kill, or assaulting the men who had abused them for years. The media began referring to them as the ""Sisters in Pain,"" a name they embraced. These are their stories. Linda Elisabeth Beattie and Mary Angela Shaughnessy's interviews of seven of the Sisters in Pain detail the physical, sexual, or psychological abuse they suffered at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends, battery beyond comprehension. Clark describes the risks and correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) among adolescents. Using longitudinal data, she finds that the victim-offender overlap that exists in general violence extends to IPV. Also, Michael Johnson's typology of IPV among adults likely exists among adolescents; sometimes IPV is perpetrated by both partners, and sometimes it is perpetrated by only one. Moreover, IPV victimization is not evenly distributed among adolescents, and more targeted interventions are likely needed to prevent abuse. Clark integrates multiple theories of violence and victimization, incl

Cosimo examines the effects of civil and criminal legal sanctions for domestic violence related offenses on recidivism and on whether the number of legal sanctions imposed by the courts influences non-recidivism status. With an overall recidivism rate of 30.3%, results show that the risk of recidivism is 45% lower for men who experienced two legal sanctions (arrest and probation) relative to men who experienced one legal sanction (civil protective order). Additionally, men with prior criminal court involvement for domestic violence offenses are more likely to recidivate. Rather than reducing o

This text offers a balance of clinical and social psychological theory and research, as well as prevention and intervention techniques with the purpose of understanding and ultimately ending gender-based violence. The authors address several forms of violence, including rape, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual harassment in a contemporary linguistic style carefully crafted to avoid victim blaming. Although most men do not perpetrate violence against women, such violence is not a "women's" issue; it will take the strength and courage of both women and men to solve this human issue.
