Peter Moraw, a leading constitutional historian of the later middle ages, has taken a particular interest in the study of medieval universities as training grounds of Western elites. His essays collected here from widely scattered source begin with general reflections on the medieval university, are followed by 8 studies of Central and East Central centers, such as Prague, Heidelberg and Cracow, and conclude with 4 social-historical and prosopographical papers on professors, students and graduates and their careers. Appendices include a sketch of the Repertorium academicum Germanicum project, and a full list of the author’s published work.

Der Band faßt die Beiträge eines Symposions zusammen, welches das Heinrich-Heine-Institut (Düsseldorf) vom 20.-22.10.1992 in Verbindung mit der Equipe Transferts Culturels im CNRS (Paris) und dem Istituto Storico Italo-Germanico (Trient) durchführte. Gegenstand sind die Prozesse des grenzüberschreitenden Kultur- und Wissenschaftstranfers vom 18. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert (mit einem Schwerpunkt im 19. Jahrhundert). Sie werden anhand von Fallbeispielen, aber auch in größeren Querschnitten untersucht. Neben die internationale Ausrichtung tritt die interdisziplinäre. So reicht das Spektrum der Aufsätze von der Literatur über die Geschichtsschreibung bis zur Geschichte von Wissenschaftsinstitutionen und Naturwissenschaften. The volume assembles the papers held at a symposium organised by the Heinrich Heine Institute (Düsseldorf), 20-22 October 1992, in cooperation with the Equipe Transferts Culturels of the CNRS (Paris) and the Istituto Storico Italo-Germanico (Trent). They deal with the processes of cross-frontier cultural and scientific transfer from the 18th to the 20th century (with special emphasis on the 19th century). The scope of the treatment ranges from individual cases to broader overviews. The approach is not only international but also interdisciplinary, ranging from literature to historiography and the history of scientific institutions and branches of science.
