Abstract

Security and risk management are principally concerned with the protection and conservation of corporate assets and resources. The task of protection continues to be an increasingly complex one in a time when technology is creating new products (and thus risk) at an explosive rate. Add this to the crime rate -- now aggravated by domestic and international terrorism -- and the importance of risk analysis and evaluation to design proper protection becomes self-evident. With an awareness of the growing threat of global terrorism, the third edition of RISK ANALYSIS AND THE SECURITY SURVEY

This expanded new edition continues to demonstrate and provide theoretical, analytical, and practical knowledge for first responders. Face-to-face interaction with the client/victim is part of the comprehensive approach advocated by the book, which requires interveners to assess the nature of a crisis and the condition of the victim in order to determine the appropriate course of action. The comprehensive balance of theory and practice presented in this book should enable the intervener in coupling his/her general knowledge of human psychology and emotional crisis with the specific and novel c

Abstract

In all legal systems of the European Union the law of contract and the law of tort form the main pillars of the law of obligations. Legal history and comparative law show, however, that it is not possible to cope with these two bodies of rules alone - even if their scope of application is generously conceived. Another part of the law of obligations, alongside the law of unjustified enrichment, which to some extent lies "between" contract and tort and fills the gaps that those areas of the law leave behind, is subject of this Book. The Study Group on a European Civil Code has drafted Principles relating to the unsolicited and voluntary undertaking of another's affairs on the basis of a reasonable ground for intervention: "Principles of European Law: Benevolent Intervention in Another's Affairs".

Abstract

Of the three categories that Raul Hilberg developed in his analysis of the Holocaust—perpetrators, victims, and bystanders—it is the last that is the broadest and most difficult to pinpoint. Described by Hilberg as those who were “once a part of this history,” bystanders present unique challenges for those seeking to understand the decisions, attitudes, and self-understanding of historical actors who were neither obviously the instigators nor the targets of Nazi crimes. Combining historiographical, conceptual, and empirical perspectives on the bystander, the case studies in this book provide powerful insights into the complex social processes that accompany state-sponsored genocidal violence.
