Abstract

During recent decades, there has been a profound change in the way that researchers have read and interpreted the sources of the Middle Ages. This shift has prompted scholars to reconsider the historical value of the medieval cartularies. From Charters to Codex. Studies on Cartularies and Archival Memory in the Middle Ages features a selection of papers that were presented at the international conference on Cartularies in Medieval Europe: Texts and Contexts held by the Centre for Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon (11-12 June 2015). This book focuses mainly on cartularies in the strict sense of the term, mostly produced within the ecclesiastical sphere. Moreover, some of the contributions presented here regard (or also regard) documentary collections in volume form that cannot be identified with the libri iurium et privilegiorum as traditionally understood, but were equally born out of the need to organise the parchment charters that formed the archives of their creators and to make them usable for a number of purposes. This volume, which approaches the topic through various case studies, will be of use not only to scholars who are engaged in the study of cartularies but also to researchers who are involved in the broader investigation of how and to what ends medieval institutions established and managed their archival memories.

Abstract

This book deals with the life and work of the learned counsellor Johannes Hofmann von Lieser (Lysura) († 1459), a close friend of Nicholas of Cusa, known for the political verse “Cusa et Lysura pervertunt omnia iura”. The thesis is examining principally three topics: (1) First, the diplomatic career of Lieser, with a focus on his political role in the German politics towards the Council of Basle (1431-1447) and in the so called “Reichsreform” in the 1450s, and third on Liesers engagement as a professor of Canon Law at the University of Louvain from 1456 to 1458.(2) The second part analyses Liesers political speeches at the imperial diets of Regensburg and Frankfurt am Main (1454). Thematically, the analysis regards chiefly the “Reichsreform”, but also the history of the Teutonic Order. Methodologically, two different aims of political speech are juxtaposed: on the one hand the rhetorical approach of German learned counsellors, on the other hand the humanistic one, represented by Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who revised one of Liesers speeches. Furthermore, it is shown that the diffusion of political texts in the fifteenth century depended – not exclusively, but also – on their applicability in oratory, as learned counsellors worked with these texts as professional orators. (3) The third part is dedicated to Liesers up to now completely unknown juridical work. Several “consilia” and a “repetitio” are analysed in order to show how Lieser worked as a jurist and how he the profile of learned counsellors as jurists can contribute to a better understanding of them as politicians.

Abstract

This text is about editing documentary texts. It is not a book of instructions, indeed Professor Harvey has only three unbending rules: be accurate; say what you are going to do and do it; and give full references to the document and describe it. Based on these three prinicples he examines the underlying principles of editing records and historical documents, and the considerations the editor sought to bear in mind when working on these sorts of texts. Drawing on over 30 years' experience as a general editor of the ten volumes of the prestigious "Portsmouth Record Series", Professor Harvey looks at the kinds of decisions and methodology the editor should adopt, citing the advantages and disadvantages he has encountered with varying approaches and points of style. Amongst the issues discussed are: selection of documents; the quest for accuracy; normalization; translation; punctuation; abbreviations; calendaring; presentation and layout; consistency in the use of symbols; external presentation; the archival setting; the historical setting; appendices; the glossary; and indexing, including indexing people, places and subjects. This book should be of value to archivists and historians, and for anyone involved in editing historical documents for publication, either in hard copy or electronic format.
