This book outlines how community sentences and early release options are administered in China. Chen provides empirical insights into the emerging community sector of the Chinese penal system, and illustrates how Chinese criminal courts decide between imprisonment and community sentences. Drawing on interviews with government and non-governmental supervisors, this methodological and rigorous study offers an in-depth discussion of the enforcement of these community sanctions and measures (CSM). By using the CSM reform as an example, this book illustrates the adaptation of Chinese governance and social control. Ultimately, Chen argues that the current model of governance in China (disciplinary governance) cannot guarantee an effective state-agent relationship; it also denies local governments sufficient legitimacy to secure social stability. Finally, proposing that only the rule of law and an active judiciary can complement these two deficiencies, this book will be of great interest to scholars of criminology, law, and penology, as well as anyone who is interested in how China is held together in a socio-legal sense.

Memory, Subjectivity and Independent Chinese Cinema provides a historically informed examination of independent moving image works made between 1990 and 2010 in China. Showcasing an evolving personal mode of narrating memory, documenting reality, and inscribing subjectivity in over sixteen selected works that range from narrative film and documentary to experimental video and digital media (even including a multimedia avant-garde play), this book presents a provocative portrait of the independent filmmakers as a peculiarly pained yet active group of historical subjects of the transitional, post-socialist era. Through a connected investigation of cultural and cinematic concepts including historical consciousness, personal memory, narrative, performance, subjectivity, spatiality, and the body, Wang weaves a critical narrative of the formation of a unique post-socialist cultural consciousness that enables independent cinema and media to become a highly significant and effective conduit for historical thinking in contemporary China. Covers the following directorsZhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Jia Zhangke, Jiang Wen, Lou Ye, Meng Jinghui, Wang Bing, Wang Guangli, Duan Jinchuan, Cui Zi'en, Shi Tou, and Tang Danhong, this book is essential reading for all students and scholars in Chinese film.

This book offers a systematic introduction to Budd-Chiari syndrome, a rare but life-threatening vascular disorder of the liver, which refers to obstructions at any site from the hepatic veins to the suprahepatic inferior vena cava. The book mainly covers the history, epidemiology, etiology and risk factors, pathology, diagnosis, pharmacological and interventional aspects, surgical treatment, etiological treatment, and prognostic assessment of Budd-Chiari syndrome. Notably, it also presents cutting-edge research findings in this field. The early diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome is vital, as it allows clinicians to pursue more targeted and effective treatment strategies, thus improving patient outcomes. However, much information, including the latest advances, has not yet been fully disseminated in current clinical practice. This book addresses that gap, helping physicians to improve diagnosis and establish standard treatment strategies, helping researchers conduct clinical and experimental studies, and even helping patients and their relatives to recognize this disease. .

This book aims to facilitate readers to understand the origin, growth pattern and relationship between tumor and adherent structure of craniopharyngioma, so as to improve the cure rate and safety of surgery. It’s contributed by Neurosurgery Department of Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, China, which focuses on the management of craniopharyngioma. This book covers histoembryology of craniopharyngioma, together with anatomical morphology and abundant clinical data, systematically showing an innovative classification method, i.e. QST classification. This classification method can better reflect the different origin and growth pattern of craniopharyngioma, the relationship between tumors and surrounding structure of the tumor growth pattern, and clinical significance in surgery. The 70 clinical cases with different classification and treatment history are discussed as an important reference for surgical treatment of craniopharyngioma. The anatomy, morphology and pathology of sellar region also have great reference value for researchers in the field of neural science. The underlying intention of this book is to help bring a change in the concept that “craniopharyngioma is an incurable benign tumor only due to its anatomical location”.
