Abstract

This volume argues for the development of a macro perspective within psychology that more effectively incorporates social structures, systems, policies, and institutions. The book emphasizes how social structures and systems can ultimately promote, or erode, psychological wellbeing. Macropsychology is concerned with "understanding up," or how we can influence the settings and conditions of the society in which we live. Psychology has traditionally been more interested in "understanding down," that is, with the behaviour of individuals and groups; in inter-psychic and intra-psychic and in neurological and biological processes. This volume argues that psychology can more effectively contribute at the macro or societa level, by addressing grand challenges and global goals, using big data, and intervening at the population level.Bringing together social, organizational, cultural, and health psychology research, the book demonstrates a broad range of areas benefitting from a macropsychology perspective, particularly areas integral to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Contributors address the value of macropsychological perspectives in addressing sub-topics such as: Mental health Personality traits and social structure Disability rights Food systems Humanitarian work psychology Macropsychology: A Population Science for Sustainable Development Goals aims to recognise and give impetus to a neglected perspective within psychology, and to inspire a paradigm-widening within the field of psychology, facilitating greater involvement with social justice and human rights.

Abstract

Psychology of Aid provides an original, psychological approach to development studies, focusing as it does on the social aspects of aid and the motivational foundations. Designed as a practical tool for looking at development projects in a new and structured way, the authors bring many of the social aspects of development and aid together in one book; from the needs of the Northern donor to the public tensions between Third World host and foreign development agencies.

Abstract

Psychoprosthetics is the study of the psychological aspects of prosthetic use and of rehabilitative processes in those conditions that require the use of prosthetic devices. For people with limb loss, the fitting of a prosthesis can give rise to a variety of issues from functional rehabilitation to quality of life, well-being, participation in society and cosmetic satisfaction. As prosthetic technology continues to become more sophisticated and advanced, there is an onus on those who work with prosthetic users, to be aware of the impact of prosthetics on the ways in which people understand and construct their realities and their attempts to cope with and relate to them. However, despite the broad and increasing interest in psychosocial aspects of prosthetic use and rehabilitation, to date there has not been a complete volume on the topic – this book now addresses that need. Psychoprosthetics brings together the most recent and exciting research and knowledge in this new field into one easily accessible volume. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex human dynamics involved in prosthetic use and provides an analysis of the practice, research and theory in the field of psychoprosthetics. Written by some of the leading experts to the field, this informative and cutting-edge text will be of relevance to students, practitioners and researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including prosthetics and orthotics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation medicine, engineering, nursing and psychology.

Abstract

Disability and International Development Towards Inclusive Global Health Edited by Malcolm MacLachlan & Leslie Swartz One of the greatest challenges facing modern global health is how to include the most marginalized and impoverished people in international efforts to promote social and economic development. In Disability and International Development disability rights are situated within the broader context of global health and the need for much greater inter-sector collaboration. Reports from a broad cross-section of low- and middle-income countries locales as diverse as Zimbabwe, Bolivia, Kyrgyzstan, and Papua New Guinea move beyond surface discussions of "what is working" and "what shows promise" to discuss political and governance contexts, the roles of people with disabilities in research by outsiders, concurrent struggles (e.g., women's or children's rights), and instructive inroads made by community activists and national Disabled People's Organizations. The results are provocative, and offer new lenses for viewing both the issues and the populations they affect. Each of the book's chapters spotlights a topic as representative of the enormity and immediacy of challenges to inclusive global health, including: The impact of international human rights law on domestic law and local traditions. The effect of failed states on the lives of people with disabilities. Empowerment and advocacy: disability organizations and movements. HIV/AIDS interventions with disabled persons. Assistive technologies in low-income countries. Strategies for improving the lives of children with disabilities. Cross-disciplinary as well as cross-cultural, Disability and International Development will attract a wide audience of professionals in rehabilitation, social welfare and human rights; governmental and non-governmental organizations and disabled people's organizations; researchers and practitioners. It will also be relevant to those working in health and welfare administration, health policy, international aid and development, and human rights. In addition, graduate students in disability studies, public and global health and international development should find this an important guide to the future of these fields.
