Abstract

Part of the Essentials in Ophthalmology series, this atlas is designed to comprehensively cover optical coherence tomography of the anterior segment of the eye. The aim is to improve knowledge of the fundamentals of OCT technology for anterior segment, clarify the differences with posterior segment OCT and emphasize the immense relevance and usefulness that anterior segment OCT study has for diagnosis, therapeutic orientation, surgical guidance, and improvement in patient management. Atlas of Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography is organized into comprehensive chapters on the following topics: fundamentals, technologies and technological differences among platforms, application of OCT, corneal OCT angiography, as well as case-based chapters. Numerous highly-detailed figures, illustrations and photographs make this an ideal resource for the corneal specialist seeking further instruction on this cutting-edge technology. The case-based chapters include such conditions as bowman dystrophies, trauma, cataract, glaucoma, sclera, refractive surgery, ocular infections, and are structured to facilitate the consultant surgeon by providing practical information applicable to practical cases in their practice.

Abstract

The diversity of procedures that characterize modern refractive surgery makes it, both for the beginner and the experienced surgeon, necessary to have well established guidelines to face refractive complications. This lavishly illustrated guide is written by international opinion leaders with extensive experience in the practice of refractive surgery. It offers the reader practical pearls to the solution and prevention of the different complications of corneal and refractive surgery. Complications covered include: Intraoperative complications, e.g. intraocular refractive surgery, femtosecond laser, LASIK and EPILASIK, refractive lens exchange, corneal refractive surgery, early post-operative complications and late post-operative complications. All complications are described and lavishly illustrated from its pathogenesis to its treatment modalities. It provides ophthalmic surgeons with the most adequate solutions for the most frequent problems they face in their daily practice.

Abstract

Keratoplasty techniques have evolved in the last 15 years into a variety of forms, which have diversified the previous monographic presence of the penetrating keratoplasty technique. The development of anterior lamellar graft (DALK), and posterior lamellar graft (DSAEK), makes an important change in the approach to lamellar surgery. Later on, the appearance of DMEK and superficial lamellar keratectomy broadened the spectrum. Today, intralamellar surgery has evolved with a number of techniques that involve stromal enhancement with biologically active or acellular corneal laminas from donors, customized lenticles from SMILE surgeries or customized by corneal topography, and more recently, corneal regeneration of the stroma by advanced techniques using mesenchymal stem cells. This book offers a comprehensive overview of modern keratoplasty techniques, the technology, surgical skills, and outcomes. It highlights the practical uses of keratoplasty for all cornea surgeons and anterior segment surgeons. The book is divided into sections, each covering a specific type of keratoplasty, including chapters on innovations within each surgery type. The goal of this book is to unify all recent knowledge about the different keratoplasty techniques and outcomes, creating a one-stop resource for ophthalmaolgy surgeons. Modern Keratoplasty is a must-have resource for corneal specialists and surgeons, anterior segment surgeons, refractive surgeons, cataract surgeons, residents, fellows, and corneal researchers.

Abstract

These guidelines, compiled by a panel of clinicians and scientists with a high level of expertise, aim to provide readers with the most up-to-date and comprehensive instructions on the treatment and prevention of ocular inflammation. All of the recommendations are explicitly linked to supporting evidence and graded according to the strength of that evidence, and the editors have made every effort to ensure that chapters are of a consistently high methodological quality. The guidelines for each treatment include dose and the frequency and mode of delivery. Significant side-effects of treatment are identified and distinguished from those of the disease in question. Suggestions are presented for the prevention both of the disease itself and of the treatment-related complications. In addition, likely future directions in treatment and prevention are identified. These guidelines will be of great practical value for all clinicians and clinical scientists with an interest in the subject.

Abstract

This comprehensive volume presents data describing the role of oxidative stress in anterior eye disease. The content is divided into three logical parts: basic science of the cornea, basic science of the lens, and clinical practices. The first two parts include eighteen chapters that discuss topics ranging from oxidative stress and dry eye disease, endogenous protection of corneal cells against oxidative damage, the therapeutic potential of corneal stem cells, etiology of cataracts and preventive measures, corneal degeneration through oxidative stress and cataract formation, and function and dysregulation of ion channels and transporters in the ocular lens, among others. The concluding part is comprised of four chapters devoted to advancements in corneal surgery, cataract and diabetic retinopathy, the clinical treatment of cataracts including traumatic cataracts, and cataracts in the pediatric age group. Studies on the Cornea and Lens is an essential addition to the library or department of physicians and scientists who treat or research these ocular conditions, particularly cataracts. It is also a key resource for cell biologists studying oxidative stress. This book is an authoritative contribution to Springer’s Oxidative Stress in Applied Basic Research and Clinical Practice series.
