« Être citoyen, ce n'est pas vivre en société, c'est la changer. » Augusto Boal. En 1971, Augusto Boal, alors qu'il rentrait chez lui après une journée de répétition dans son théâtre, est arrêté et emprisonné dans un commissariat de la police militaire. Accusé d'être un agent de liaison au profit des « subversifs » (c'est-à-dire, des opposants au régime), il est longuement interrogé puis torturé. Après plusieurs jours placé à l'isolement, il est transféré vers la prison Tiradentes où, en compagnie d'autres prisonniers politiques, il découvre l'univers carcéral brésilien. L'emprisonnement d'Augusto Boal a lieu pendant une période paradoxale au Brésil, celle des années 1969 – 1973. Pour les défenseurs de la dictature militaire qui sévissait alors, se sont les années du « miracle brésilien », qui ont vu le pays bénéficier d'une forte croissance économique. Mais ce sont également des « années de plomb » au cours desquelles le régime militaire, au pouvoir depuis 1964, a exercé une répression sanglante dans tout le pays, censurant les médias (et les arts) et systématisant les arrestations et la torture. Le récit d'Augusto Boal, très vif, qui n'abandonne jamais l'humour, même dans les moments les plus tragiques, est un texte nécessaire. Il parle de l'angoisse, de la souffrance, mais aussi du courage, de la force et de l'amitié. Il dresse un portrait d'une noirceur sans faille du Brésil de ces années-là. Malgré la violence et la répression féroce du régime, l'espoir est là, sans optimisme naïf (qui conduirait à l'inaction), dans les voix multiples du peuple brésilien qui se bat.
