This study seeks to bring educational theory on self-directedness to bear on translator training, and to document ways intentional learning for autonomy are being fostered, or could be. Our project connects to ongoing scholarly efforts toward establishing learner autonomy and empowerment as a priority goal in translator training and education. However, here we also wish to take stock of, and reflect more on, what autonomy means in principle, its connection to student development (intra- and inter-) personally and pre-professionally, self-directed learning's (SDL) relationship to current learning methods, supports and role definitions we can use in our instruction, and the learning behaviors, motivations and outcomes we can expect. In the process, we will examine the extent to which related self-directedness practices now emerging can be integrated into awareness and thus help translation learners advance toward intentionality.

This book by Alissa Quart explores the myths and realities surrounding the American Dream, particularly the ideal of self-reliance. Quart critiques the cultural narrative that individuals must succeed independently, often ignoring systemic inequalities and societal factors. The author draws on her experiences running the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, highlighting the challenges faced by economically vulnerable individuals. She examines the social constructs that perpetuate self-blame among those struggling financially, and challenges the glorification of individual success stories. Quart argues for a reevaluation of what constitutes success and advocates for a more supportive and equitable society. The book addresses readers interested in social justice, economic inequality, and cultural studies.

"The art of pushing back and speaking up is a logical follow-up to Amber Cabral's first book, Allies and Advocates. It offers even more tactical steps to help people address inequitable treatment and gives them the tools to call it out when they see it. Instead of passive-aggressive language, shrinking, or ghosting, this book will give the reader a communications toolkit for self-advocacy and advocating for others. The Art of Pushback will equip the reader with the tools to call out wrongdoing at home, at work, and in public settings. Where Allies and Advocates challenged the reader to "be brave," this book will provide tactics, context, and tools including sample scripts and other communications templates to make the prospect of bravery less daunting."--
