Existe-t-il une façon éthique pour les femmes de s'habiller ou encore de transformer leur corps ? Qui est responsable de l'apparence des femmes dans nos sociétés ? Les femmes elles-mêmes, les dessinateurs de mode ou l'industrie du marketing, du vêtement et des cosmétiques ? Et qu'en est-il des fillettes et des adolescentes ? Leur anorexie est-elle aussi tributaire de la mode qu'on le dit ? Leur attirance pour la mode hypersexualisée, aussi problématique qu'on le prétend ? Et pourquoi leurs mères s'inquiètent-elles autant de les voir se transformer en lolitas alors qu'elles sont elles-mêmes prêtes à se soumettre à tous les supplices pour paraître belles et sexy ? Perçoivent-elles la mode comme un instrument d'asservissement ou de liberté ? On peut aussi se demander si les femmes ont véritablement les moyens de faire preuve d'éthique dans leurs choix de vêtements, de coiffure et d'apparence corporelle puisqu'elles sont victimes d'un système marchand qui les tyrannise sans relâche. Un tel questionnement oblige à tenir compte des facteurs culturels, ethniques et religieux liés aux attentes sociétales. Quant aux acteurs de l'industrie de la mode, peuvent-ils faire preuve d'éthique au niveau de la création, de la production et de la commercialisation de leurs produits sans risquer d'être moins compétitifs ? Les designers ont-ils une responsabilité sociale en tant qu'artistes ? Les gestionnaires ont-ils la possibilité d'opter pour des processus de production textile moins polluants ? Et peuvent-ils positionner leur marque sur le plan éthique alors qu'elle s'inscrit dans une logique mercantile ? Autant de questions qui démontrent l'étendue des dilemmes éthiques auxquels l'industrie de la mode est confrontée.
