Abstract

Abstract

The extent to which a brain injured individual can resume premorbid functioning depends on factors ranging from the physiological to the psychological. Originally published in 1989, the thesis of this volume is that atheoretical application of practical techniques in clinical neuropsychology is as ill-conceived as a neuropsychological theory that fails to acknowledge the role of historical or situational context in behaviour or task performance. The chapters that follow address this thesis as experimental psychologists join clinicians in an effort to bridge the gap between theoretical abstraction and practical reality.

Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid is an essential, clear, and colorless liquid essential for maintaining homeostasis of the brain and neuronal functioning. Its secretion in adults ranges from 400 to 600 ml per day and it is renewed about four or five times daily. Cerebrospinal fluid is mainly reabsorbed from arachnoid granulations. Any disruption in this well-regulated system, such as overproduction, decreased absorption, or obstruction, could lead to hydrocephalus. This book contains essential knowledge about cerebrospinal fluid anatomy and physiology, pathologies related to cerebrospinal fluid, and treatment strategies for cerebrospinal fluid disorders.

Abstract

The Meyer University Hospital Report on health and scientific activity is a valuable tool for sharing and disseminating information that summarises the working methods, the results and the lines of improvement that must be particularly committed. It is an instrument of knowledge and evaluation which is therefore intended for a use both inside and outside the hospital. A dynamic tool, which must be perfected, together with the improvements pursued by the hospital.

Abstract

In this research binocular rivalry is used as a tool to investigate different aspects of visual and multisensory perception. Several experiments presented here demonstrated that touch speci cally interacts with vision during binocular rivalry and that the interaction likely occurs at early stages of visual processing, probably V1 or V2. Another line of research also presented here demonstrated that human adult visual cortex retains an unexpected high degree of experience-dependent plasticity by showing that a brief period of monocular deprivation produced important perceptual consequences on the dynamics of binocular rivalry, reflecting a homeostatic plasticity. In summary, this work shows that binocular rivalry is a powerful tool to investigate different aspects of visual perception and can be used to reveal unexpected properties of early visual cortex.

Abstract

Diagnostics and diseases related to the cerebrovascular system are constantly evolving and updating. 3D augmented reality or quantification of cerebral perfusion are becoming important diagnostic tools in daily practice and the role of the cerebral venous system is being constantly revised considering new theories such as that of "the glymphatic system." This book provides updates on models, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the cerebrovascular system.

Abstract

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), also known as von Recklinghausen disease, is a major monogenic neurocutaneous disorder. The NF1 gene encodes the protein neurofibromin whose dysfunction promotes tumorigenesis in central and peripheral neuronal tissues. In addition to inducing the formation of cutaneous pigmented lesions or neurofibromas, NF1 affects multiple organ systems, resulting in neurological and psychiatric disorders, orthopedic conditions, and impaired endocrine functions. This book examines the fundamental, clinical, and basic aspects of NF1 over three sections and nine chapters. Topics addressed include bone lesions in children with NF1, diffuse neurofibromatous tissue, seizures in adults with NF1, Ras-GAP function of neurofibromin, endocrine disorders characteristic of NF1, and more.
